Job purpose

The Dean provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the college's Division, with responsibility for degree credit programs, as well as a Career Studies Certificate programs. As part of an academic management team pursuing excellence through collaboration and creation of a learner-centered environment, the position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean implements divisions goals and objectives related to the college's strategic plan; oversees program and course development and evaluations; promotes and maintains relationships with community agencies, organizations and businesses that support the division; recommends the hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty and division staff; evaluates full-time and adjunct faculty and divisions staff; implements college policies and procedures appropriate to division operations; manages operations of relevant grants and contracts; manages the divisions budget and expenditures; and ensures compliance with state mandated performance measures, regional accreditation requirements, and standards for professional program accreditation.


The Division for Communications, Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) contains a wide variety of academic programs including Associate of Arts degrees, Certificates, and Career Studies Certificates that support direct transfer to 4-year colleges and universities, as well as direct pathways to careers. The academic disciplines include Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Liberal Arts, Photography, Graphic and Media Design.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Division.
o Responsible for degree credit programs and Career Studies Certificate programs.
o Gives focused attention to budgetary planning and operational processes that effectively support the needs of College.
o Proposes, creates, and implements projects and initiatives that serve the College's strategic goals for student success, excellence, and innovative partnerships.
o Advises the Vice President for Academic Affairs on matters related to development, implementation and review of programs to include admission policies and procedures for the division.
o Serves as liaisons with internal and external auditors while ensuring compliance with statutes, policies, regulations and procedures of the VCCS and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
o Participates in creating and administering the division budget to ensure effective and efficient use of the division's resources.
o Leads, manages, and coordinates assessment of college and division goals and of outcomes.
o Resolves student, faculty and staff complaints based on applicable policies and procedures.


  • Provide oversight for curriculum development and innovations, program and course review, and assessment of student learning outcomes for the division.
o Builds and maintains strong relationships with community and four-year institutions to ensure graduates are prepared for success in meeting employer expectations and/or baccalaureate degree program admissions requirement.
o Ensures compliance with requirements and standards for SACSCOC and specialized or programmatic accreditation with special attention to student learning outcomes.
o Conducts systematic curriculum development and review, ensuring continued excellence in signature programs, and building new and emerging programs.
o Coordinates with program and department chairs on curricula, scheduling, staffing, and assessment.
o Creates faculty class schedule assignments and monitor and report faculty workload.
o Promotes and ensures quality, accuracy, and responsiveness of student advising.
o Promotes effective use of technology in face-to-face and online instruction.


  • Directs, plans, organizes, and provides leadership to the day to day operations and recruit, develop, supervise, support, and evaluate full-time and part-time faculty.
o Provides constructive feedback and professional development to ensure faculty and staff have the necessary skills and abilities to accomplish goals and objectives.
o Evaluates faculty based on the Faculty Development and Evaluation plan to ensure that faculty is academically and experientially qualified, mentored and monitored.
o Recruits and recommends, for employment, candidates for full-time and part-time faculty and staff positions.
o Ensures that faculty and staff credentials meet all applicable state and professional licensing and accreditation requirements.


  • Develop pathways for timely program completion for programs in the Division and meets the needs of students and community stakeholders both on and off campus.
o Represents the college as appropriate at community functions, state-wide and national meetings to promote and market the college's programs and services.
o Works with Workforce Development and business and industry to develop and maintain internship and cooperative education opportunities for students.
o Reviews processes, procedures, and collaborates in the implementation of new technologies and workflows to improve services to students.
o Works with four-year colleges and universities to develop and maintain innovative partnerships that provide effective pathways for efficient transfer.
o Provides leadership for special programs and initiatives, to include dual enrollment, early college, and college readiness in conjunction with regional high schools; developmental mathematics; honors; student cohorts and learning communities; service learning.
o Ensures compliance with all Federal/State laws.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree with 18 graduate semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university in a discipline served by the Division.
  • Experience in curriculum development, assessment and accreditation, integrated higher education student information systems and development and application of academic policies and procedures.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in:
o Implementing best practices and innovative strategies that support teaching and learning.
o Supervising personnel, training methodologies, and communication techniques.
o Planning, implementing, and monitoring of budgets.
o Managing and developing curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in education leadership, educational administration or any related field.
  • Extensive/progressive experience with one or more of the following: dual enrollment, early college, and college readiness in conjunction with regional high schools; developmental mathematics; honors; student cohorts and learning communities; service learning.
  • Familiarity with SACSCOC accreditation standards as well as any applicable specialized accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements.
  • Teaching and/or administrative experience at a college or university and experience with college transfer and career & technical programs.



Special Requirements

Hours of Duty: Will vary, some evenings and weekend may be required
