Position Summary

The Department of Classics at Bowdoin College seeks applicants for a visiting assistant professor position beginning July 1, 2021. A PhD by July 1, 2021 is preferred; ABD considered. This is a full-time position with an initial appointment for one year and the possibility of renewal for an additional two years after successful review and reappointment. Teaching responsibilities for this position will consist of two courses per semester; topics for these courses in 2021-2022 will likely include: Latin and/or Greek at the intermediate or advanced level, and courses in translation related to the successful candidate's areas of expertise. We are particularly interested in offering courses that will broaden our curriculum in ways that invite engagement with other fields, expand the scope of our own, open our doors widely to curious students, and which make use of the outstanding collection of ancient material at the Bowdoin College Museum.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. Bowdoin is a learning community that warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and from those who will enrich and contribute to the College's multifaceted diversity. We especially encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit a letter of application that describes how your teaching, scholarship, and/or mentoring would potentially support our commitment to diversity and inclusion, a CV, and the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Review of applications will begin February 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Founded in 1794 on the Maine coast, Bowdoin is one of the oldest and most selective coeducational, residential liberal arts colleges in the country.
