Psychiatric Consultant

Haverford College seeks to hire a part time (9.5 hours per week), 32 week, non-exempt Psychiatric Consultant.

The responsibilities for the position include providing psychiatric evaluations to undergraduate students, follow up consultation and medical review; prescribing psychiatric medications; collaborating with therapists at the Counseling Center; making referrals to community mental health providers for students requiring long-term or specialized psychiatric care; and communicating with campus partners as needed.There is no call required

The position entails 300 hours of commitment during the academic year. This includes mandatory weekly Monday meeting with CAPS staff.The psychiatrist reports to the Director of CAPS. CAPS is not directly affiliated with or embedded within the student health services and thus keeps separate confidential documentation of sessions. The primary collaboration is with staff psychologists and psychology postdoctoral fellows and externs. Additionally, the psychiatrist collaborates closely with health services coordinating laboratory draws, medication records and pick-up, eating disorders treatment, and addiction treatment. The psychiatrist is invited to weekly case discussions of students, a reading group, and conversations about the larger college community. The psychiatrist is expected to contribute and provide feedback in these formats, but not asked to serve in a direct supervisory role of trainees or psychologists.



Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
  • Providing initial psychiatric consultation, medical review and evaluation to undergraduate students.
  • Providing follow up consultations and reviews to undergraduate students.
  • Prescribe psychiatric medications to undergraduate students when warranted.
  • Collaborate with senior staff therapists and psychological trainees in CAPS about undergraduate students.
  • Collaborate with health services in order to monitor and coordinate laboratory draws, medication records and pick up, eating disorder and addiction treatments.
  • Make referrals to community mental health providers for students requiring long-term or specialized psychiatric care and communicate with campus partners as needed.
  • Attend weekly reading group and case discussion of students along with full CAPS staff, Psychiatrist is expected to contribute as a consultant and provide feedback in these formats, but not asked to serve in a direct supervisory role of trainees or psychologists.
  • Lead weekly "psychiatric rounds" to review students being seen.
  • Maintain separate confidential documentation of sessions.

  • They will enjoy working as part of a team and posses good communication skills, including charting and correspondence.



Line of Report:

Dual report to the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, and to the Dean for Student Health and Learning Resources



Education, Training, & Experience:

  • Psychiatrist will be licensed in Pennsylvania as either an M.D. or D.O. and ideally have experience providing services to a young adult population.
