Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Department: Office of the President

Type: Full-time, Staff

Reports to: President

The Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will have primary responsibility for advancing a campus culture that seeks and supports diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice at Stephens College. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as an advocate and source of information and expertise for students and employees related to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion;
  2. Advise HR on best practices for recruiting, hiring, and retaining a diverse staff, as well as how to manage employee relations with sensitivity;
  3. Identify and plan diversity, equity and inclusion training programs for all campus stakeholders to raise awareness and cultivate a culture of civility, respect, and ethical behavior;
  4. Oversee periodic assessments of the campus climate, and use results to design and deliver programs that improve the culture of inclusion;
  5. Ensure college policies and processes are consistent with best and most current practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion;
  6. Partner with internal stakeholders such as the offices of Student Development, Academic Affairs, Human Resources, and Marketing on programs, training and communication initiatives designed to establish, strengthen and communicate a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion;
  7. Collaborate with the College's Title IX coordinator on educational programs and events;
  8. Serve as the Title VI Officer;
  9. Serve as a member of the campus response team, as appropriate, in collaboration with the Office of Safety and Security, the Student Behavioral Intervention Team, and the Office of Student Development to address incidents on campus and coordinate the responses and student-support efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field (Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, Social Justice Education, etc.) is required
  • 3-5 years of experience in diversity education within a higher education context;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict-resolution skills;
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Strong judgment and the capacity to consistently make effective, sound, timely and informed decisions, even in times of stress or crisis
  • A sense of urgency when advising on critical issues;  
  • Proven ability to multi-task and to balance multiple priorities in a changing environment.
  • Track record of working independently and leading teams.
  • Ability to choose the most effective and meaningful form to express ideas and information; and to adapt content, tone, style, and form based on the needs of the reader, the subject, and the purpose of the communication;
  • Proven ability to use discretion and demonstrate sensitivity to confidentiality concerns;
  • Proven ability to foster friendly and collaborative relationships; share knowledge and mentor staff; think strategically, operate tactically, and collaborate effectively with staff and leaders across campus.
