The Department of Foundations of Education is committed to preparing educators and scholars for critical, reflective, and responsible work in education. We are guided by a commitment to educational equity, enhancing the knowledge base in our varied disciplines through research and scholarship, and engaging in service to the broader community.
In accordance with this mission, the department offers multidisciplinary perspectives that are the pillars on which all programs in the School of Education are based. Our contribution is based on the premise that the preparation of effective educational professionals requires fundamental, deep understanding of the broader perspectives that are represented by research and theory in psychological, cultural, philosophical, historical and ethical areas of inquiry.
As such, Foundations provides an essential link between practice and theory that makes effective reflection and decision-making possible. By facilitating a rich contextual understanding of contemporary educational issues and practices, Foundations enhances the ability of educators to be reflective decision makers who make effective use of complex judgments and critical thinking. Our goal is to prepare educators for intelligent, responsible leadership in a variety of educational careers and settings for teaching, research, administration and policy-making.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
The Assistant Professor, a nine-month tenure-eligible faculty member, will be responsible for maintaining an on-going program of research in the social foundations of education (history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology of education), with an emphasis on urban education and commitment to advancing access, equity, and quality education for underrepresented minority learners within urban contexts; having a clear potential for external funding to support research efforts; teaching undergraduate, master's and doctoral courses and advising doctoral students in the social foundations of education; advising and mentoring doctoral student research; collaborating with colleagues particularly in externally funded research; participating in appropriate service activities at the department, college, university, and professional organization levels. The Assistant Professor will conduct research in the social foundations, particularly on issues of urban education and the needs of communities and schools that have been historically underserved. The faculty member will help prepare highly-trained and high-quality teachers, counselors, school administrators and other professionals committed to working with diverse student populations and communities. The Assistant Professor will work collaboratively with School, Department and Research Center colleagues, other VCU faculty, students, and community stakeholders. Their work will actively support the department's commitment to preparing educators and scholars for critical, reflective, and responsible work in education geared toward educational equity, and the School of Education's goal of collective urban and regional transformation.

Position Responsibilities
1. Teaching
Teach undergraduate, master's and doctoral courses in the social foundations of education with an emphasis on urban education; advise doctoral students and serve on dissertation committees; advise and mentor doctoral student research.

2. Research
Maintain an on-going program of research in the social foundations of education, with an emphasis on urban education, including seeking external funding to support research efforts; collaborate with colleagues, particularly in externally funded research projects.

3. Service
Participate in appropriate service activities at the department, college, university and professional organization levels.

Required Qualifications

•Earned doctorate in social foundations, cultural studies in education, critical education, or related education field with a strong background in urban education;
•Record of refereed publications;
•Promise or record of external funding to support research;
•An innovative and impactful research agenda that has strong potential for external funding;
•Evidence of strong methodological skills, especially in qualitative and/or mixed methods;
•Experience conducting research related to or within urban settings with individuals in our communities who have been historically marginalized and done from a culturally responsive lens;
•Demonstrated research, scholarship, and practice in advancing access, equity, and quality education for underrepresented minority learners within urban contexts; and
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications
•Record of obtaining external funding;
•Experience working in urban schools;
•Potential for program development in interdisciplinary initiatives;
•Teaching experience at the university level;
•Experience with doctoral education;
•Experience teaching or designing online courses in social foundations or a related field;
•K-12 teaching experience.
