Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor/General Counselor, at San Diego Continuing Education to support the implementation of student success projects. The General Counselor reports to the Dean of Counseling and Student Success. Primary responsibilities include providing general counseling and other related student success services.

Major Responsibilities:
General counselors provide career, educational and personal counseling. The primary duties are to conduct group orientation sessions and workshops. Engage students in the process of informed career decision making and provide educational counseling to new and continuing students, also to be a partner in the development of the students educational goals and plan. Counselors must also be prepared to provide personal counselling to assist students in resolving personal problems in order to enable full focus on the course of study. Counselors provide academic, vocational and personal counseling, as well as student orientation sessions for a diverse student population. Typical duties associated with these responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assisting students with career planning and goal-setting, participating in the implementation of outreach/recruitment, admissions, assessment, orientation, career, and personal counseling and student follow-up activities which culminates in the development of a student education plan; facilitating the development of support services to students, including specially funded projects; monitoring student academic progress and developing academic intervention strategies for student success; developing and maintaining liaison relationships with student services, instructional services and community-based organizations; assisting with developing and maintaining program and student outcome data; preparing relative written reports; assisting with the coordination of training activities.

Qualifications:
Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,OR the equivalent.(NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desired Qualifications:
At least one year counseling experience in an educational setting preferable in a post-secondary setting. Experience or evidence of academic preparation in the areas of student orientation, skill assessment, advisement, tutoring and/or retention. Experience as a counselor or ability to serve as a counselor or adviser in an educational setting. Experience providing individual and group career counseling. Understanding of the purpose and function of Continuing Education. Knowledge and awareness of problems encountered by low income, culturally diverse and first time Continuing Education students. Knowledge of the areas of academic counseling, education equity programs, assessment and related student support services and programs. Knowledge of tests and their use and interpretation for career and educational counseling. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally. Training or experience that would indicate an ability to successfully teach or instruct large groups. Experience in or be qualified to facilitate FELI (Five day experiential learning institute) professional development workshops, staff development/in-service education. Demonstrated ability to provide outreach and recruitment services. Ability to facilitate tasks for a team of coworkers. Ability to assist in the development and implementation of student success and related projects. Experience and/or knowledge of computer applications and technology related to counseling functions. Knowledge of or ability to learn and apply the laws, regulations, rules and/or guidelines that govern institutions of higher learning. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,783.69 $7,793.19) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
