BUILDING AND DIGITAL CONTROLS SPECIALIST


Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the development, oversight and maintenance of the current computer based programs and applications operating the UW Campus managed buildings. These currently include multiple computerized building automation systems not limited to Johnson Controls; Alerton; AAM; Tridium; Phoenix; Cypress; Edstrom; ALC; Delta-V.

This position is also responsible for providing network and application integration and implementation of all building management systems and hardware that are used to operate monitor and control the UW facilities. This position may work in either the project or operations side of the UW-Digital Controls Group as dictated by campus need and administration.

The primary function of this position is to meet the criteria of a level two digital controls tech (IS Bus Auto-Senior) and have an expert level understanding in a programming discipline related to facilities automation. The incumbent will have a high level of understanding in building automation controls outside of their primary focus, knowledge of networking and BACnet integration and a working knowledge of mechanical engineering HVAC systems is needed. This position will provide recommendations on the continual development and maintenance of these systems including continuous reliability, reports from gathered data and creation of network tools to analyze systems based on individuals' expertise. The position will develop and upkeep other data contained in and outside of the applications, as well as working with the Department Of Information Technology (DoIT) utilizing the current campus networks and dedicated servers to accomplish this.

This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction, while following and supporting policies, procedures and technical assistance. The position will apply these skills in the field and office as a professional for the overall improvement of the UW Campus building automation system (BAS).

Special focus for this position will be the Physical Plant/Digital Controls Group (DCG) projects such as Energy Conservation Opportunities; PAC projects and new construction upgrades.

Minimum 2 years minimum eexperience with Digital Controls. Highly qualified applicants will have an understanding in a programming discipline related to facilities automation. Additional Information:
* Knowledge in developing and writing computer based building automation control programs; history developing point thresholds and resulting alarm databases sent by a number of systems in technology based manners.
* Knowledge of facility management operations.
* Knowledge of computer programs, integrations, interfaces and applications used for automated building control systems
* Knowledge of computer networks, IP addresses, BACnet protocol, remote access to systems.
* Knowledge of HVAC control algorithms used in building automation systems.
* Knowledgeable of computerized maintenance management systems.
* Knowledge in aspects of mechanical HVAC systems; blueprint reading and development; controls sequences writing and interpreting.
* Ability to problem solve current programs and applications that arise from building automation control errors, both long term and emergency situations.
* Ability to teach or pass instruction to personnel on broad controls subject matter with strong team building participation skills.
* Ability to navigate around a network of servers, workstations, controllers and remote hardware to pinpoint problems or anomalies, recommend or implement solutions.
* Ability to develop printouts and reports displaying data from computer programs and databases.
* Ability in computer applications like word processing, spreadsheets, databases, network management software and hardware interfaces.
* Ability to use tools of the trade to diagnose and correct program and mechanical issues.
* Ability to exercise sound judgment when developing control applications or device installation.
* Effective oral and written communication and techniques to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Direct knowledge of current practices and principles in the specialized areas of facilities automation systems and energy management systems relating to: a) HVAC pneumatic and direct digital temperature controls and components; b) steam, chilled water and electrical monitoring and metering equipment; and c) digital communications protocols, networking and data transmission systems.

Must possess a thorough understanding and the ability to write and/or modify software programs and code as needed, specifically the Johnson Controls METASYS brand DDC products programming languages such as: data definition Language-DDL, Graphic programming Language-GPL, the Application Specific Controllers software suite HVAC-Pro and METASYS extended architecture software tools.
