Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit
The VCU Department of Family Medicine and Population Health exists to:

- IMPROVE the health and well-being of the people of Virginia and beyond

- ADVANCE the science of epidemiology, family medicine, and public health by means of innovative, interdisciplinary research

- EDUCATE ourselves, our patients, our learners, and other stakeholders
- PROVIDE high quality primary care, public health services, and lead their integration

- TRAIN the next generation of epidemiologists, family physicians, and public health professionals

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
We seek a junior to mid-level, tenure-eligible faculty investigator with responsibility for the design, development, execution and dissemination of research on primary care and health services research through externally funded competitive research grants and contracts. The faculty member should have interdisciplinary research interests that complement and expand existing faculty expertise. Area of expertise is open, but areas of interest include social determinants of health, prevention, practice transformation, community engagement, addiction medicine, and quality measurement.

Position Responsibilities
1. Teaching
Teaching responsibilities may include supervision of medical students and residents. The faculty member will assist in supervision of research students that may include undergraduates, medical students and residents.

2. Research
The faculty member will join a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. The faculty member will be responsible for leading and coordinating large practice-based studies in a variety of settings, engaging participating ACORN practices and patients as partners in study activities, fielding interventions, collecting and/or facilitating collection of study data, and interpreting and disseminating of study findings to a variety of audiences. The individual is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations, across campus and with other academic institutions and PBRNs, to enhance the research program in family medicine. Mentorship opportunities are available to facilitate the faculty member's growth as an independent investigator.

3. Service
The faculty member will serve on departmental, school, and/or university committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in his/her field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

4. Clinical
The faculty member will also have 30% to 40% primary care clinical duties.

Required Qualifications
• Board certification or board eligible in Family Medicine or General Internal Medicine
• Experience with health services and public health research projects;
• A record of or potential for extramural research funding through competitive, juried grants;
• A publication record suitable for rank;
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications
• Additional training or experience in public health, preventive medicine, or epidemiology, including fellowship, masters (e.g., MPH ) or doctoral level (DrPh)-level training.
• Experience with community-based participatory research ( CBPR ) or community/stakeholder engagement.
• Knowledge of social epidemiology and socio-ecological influences on health.
• Experience working on an interdisciplinary research team. Preference will be given to candidates who can effectively engage with our current faculty in several research projects that are funded and underway; as well as those who can quickly understand and grasp the unique challenges of working with a Practiced Based Research Network ( PBRN ).
• Knowledge of and/or training in health promotion and disease prevention.
• Training in substance abuse identification and treatment.
