Business Administrator I, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The principal/core job functions include managing the daily financial, human resources and administrative operations of the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology. This position requires independent judgment and discretion as well as the utilization of advanced technical and administrative skills. Under the general direction of the chairperson, the following job duties are illustrative examples of what the position entails.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages the daily operations of the department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology.
  • Develops and prepares budgets and financial reports for department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology funds, general appropriations, endowments and other funds.
  • Compiles monthly financial projections.
  • Coordinates routine budget activity for the department including transfers, procurement, reimbursements, and payment to vendors.
  • Performs audits and reports on department budget expenditures.
  • Serves as the department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology's liaison for financial management of grant proposals and awards.
  • Provides support for department grants at all levels (including state, federal, foundation, etc.), including but not limited to expense allocations, financial oversight, and close-out processes.
  • Represents the department on business affairs to internal and external contacts and agencies.
  • Develop procedures that are compliant with university policies.
  • Manage departmental projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Manage/direct student-related activities and programs related to the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, including stipend and award processing.
  • Works in conjunction with Sponsored Programs Coordinator to assure compliance with all Federal, State, University, and local regulations pertaining to grants and contracts (pre-award grant preparation and post-award financial management).
  • Coordinates and participates in a variety of human resources activities including employment, labor relations, benefits, training, and classification for the department.
  • Manages facilities and building-related issues.
  • Supervises a small staff of exempt and nonexempt employees, including work allocation and review, training, and problem resolution.
  • Independently resolves administrative procedural problems in the department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology.
  • Coordinates assignment of space for research and teaching and manages facilities and building related issues.
  • Performs a broad range of administrative duties of a highly confidential nature, requiring initiative and judgment.
  • Purchases and keeps accurate records of equipment for the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology and related grant activities.
  • Works with the chairperson to oversee the Department annual budget.
  • Attends a variety of departmental meetings and records minutes.
  • Completes other duties and tasks, as assigned by the department chairperson.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree; preferably in business, accounting or a related field. One to two years of experience in an administrative capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Skill in budget preparation and management of contracts/grants. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Ability to communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Ability to function independently and to use sound judgment, initiative, and discretion. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Intermediate computer knowledge and experience required.
