Business Advisor, Bridgeport Region (Business Consultant), UCP 7


The Connecticut Small Business Development Center (CTSBDC) in the School of Business is seeking a full-time Business Advisor (Business Consultant, UCP 7). The incumbent will report to the State Director of the CTSBDC and will provide management, financial and general counseling/advising and training programs to owners of small businesses in the assigned geographic region, with travel throughout the state as needed for meetings, events and activities. This position acts as a consultant, advocate and liaison for all SBDC services and resources. The position will be located at the office of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council in Bridgeport, CT as well as other locations in the greater Bridgeport area as identified by the CTSBDC. In-state and out-of-state travel, as well as flexible hours, will be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Providing technical and management assistance to the small business community via traditional on-site visits, online such as Skype, email, phone or other methods of client contact.
  • Providing in-depth counseling and presenting potential courses of action to small business owners in key areas such as funding growth and expansion plans, overall financial management strategies and techniques, presentation of financial material, evaluation of current financial condition, and overall business strategies.
  • Offering reasoned, logical advice and guidance on all matters of starting, building, and sustaining a business, including knowledge of financing programs and how they are accessed as well as other public and privately owned assistance programs and how they are accessed.
  • Building, maintaining and leveraging relationships within both the debt and equity financing industry.
  • Working to assure that the CTSBDC achieves its goals as set by its principal funders and to assure compliance with host university requirements.
  • Conducting community outreach, client development, informational, training programs, and other activities to expand CTSBDC's client base.
  • Working toward the goal that each client request receives a response within two business days and will meet with a client in less than two weeks of the client submitting their initial application.
  • Assisting with the promotion and community/stakeholder support of the program; assisting with promotional activities such as advertising, brochures, mailings and presentations designed to publicize programs/services.
  • Developing and implementing an annual personal professional development plan to assure skills and knowledge required to meet advising needs.
  • Maintaining personal travel, expense, and other records and submitting expense forms to internal management.
  • Performing administrative tasks such as preparing correspondence, creating reports and collecting data as required.
  • Participating in program-related communication methods in accordance with internal policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
  • At least five years of experience in financing or funding businesses, either from a business perspective or from a lender/investor perspective, or both.Knowledgeable about general business strategies and operations.
  • Ability to advise, counsel, and mentor individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and financial situations.
  • Ability to plan, conduct and implement client development and recruitment programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and accurately, taking initiative, exercising sound judgment when making decisions and meeting deadlines.
  • Proven experience contributing to the success of a team and working well with team members.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and travel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with digital communications, online learning methods, and online research resources.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience with preparing and analyzing lending applications or funding proposals.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month, annually renewable position with excellent benefits.
