Minimum Qualifications:

• Hold a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

• Previous community college teaching experience

• Digital literacy

• Experience in academic advising

General Function:

The Cohort Support Specialist is responsible for assisting the coaches, the Dean of Athletics, and the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs with the academic success of Motlow State's student-athletes. The Cohort Support Specialist teaches student-athletes how to take an active role in their own collegiate learning and educational experience through mentoring, individual and group tutoring, utilizing study halls, and employing the college's math lab and writing centers in order to promote academic excellence. Some parts of this may include tutoring and advising while traveling to and from athletic trips. This position may also work with other cohort student groups in the same manner. Oversight of grants that involve these cohorts or peer mentors.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that all student-athletes select an academic major or career focus and has a written record of all student-athletes' stated personal and academic goals geared toward successful degree completion
  • Responsible for ensuring attendance and academic progress of each student-athlete in conjunction with the Moore County Dean and faculty
  • Works collaboratively with academic departments and faculty to increase academic success in the classroom
  • Identifies and addresses individual needs and refers to college and community resources as needed
  • Ensures every athlete attends study hall as prescribed by the coach and keeps written attendance records
  • Provides for and/or directs student-athletes to college and community based resources designed to increase student persistence
  • Required to bring student-athletes needing Math and Writing help to the Math Lab and Writing Center
  • Assists student-athletes in becoming more independent, self-confident, and efficient learners
  • Directs a mentoring support system for students
  • After receiving Early Alerts, is responsible for identifying each student-athlete considered potentially at risk and prepares a written plan of action for each student-athlete and submits the plan to the coach, athletic director, the Moore County dean and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Provides reports as needed to support retention and progression initiatives
  • Assists with other cohort groups following the same types of procedures above as needed.
  • Oversight of grants related to the cohort student duties.
