Summar y
Performs a variety of student-centered services supporting acclamation to college life, retention, and success. Assists in coordinating and carrying out various student-centered events and activities contributing to student success and retention. Monitors students' acceptable academic progress and other indicators to offer positive interventions and prepare reports for student success program compliance.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Student Success & Equity Specialist works collaboratively within the Student Success Division and other categorical units providing support to new and under-served student populations, and to facilitate the delivery of student success and support services such as assessment, orientation, educational planning, and connections to activities contributing to retention. The Student Success & Equity Specialist also gathers data for use in writing reports to higher education oversight agencies and assists with outreach and collaborative efforts to secondary education for promoting pathways to college and careers.

Essential Duties and Res p onsibilities:
  • Specific duties may vary among departments and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties:
  • Participates in the day-to-day activities and operations of the Student Equity Program, and other offices that collaborate to provide targeted services for students.
  • Assists with developing and implementing program objectives, student service outcomes, assessment measures, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides information and assistance to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and others concerning student success and support objectives. Participates in advocating and resolving student issues relating to onboarding and retention.
  • Assists with setting up academic reporting systems for an early alert to students' performance and academic progress risk, thus identifying those whose behaviors indicate a lack of academic success strategies.
  • Refers students for academic skills assistance, including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance. Assists students to connect with peers and work with support services such as counseling, financial aid, and targeted student resources.
  • Assists students with applications to related student services such as and not limited to EOPS/Care, Veterans, first-time college, concurrent employment, and student co- curricular activities.
  • Assists in coordinating program services, events, and special activities with other student functions and instructional support such as, and not limited to, educational planning workshops, 'early bird' efforts, events, and specialized advising.
  • Assists with the implementation of student services and support initiatives and tools such as those for early alert, intervention, online orientation, and other decision support resources.
  • Assists in maintaining office and student records. Gathers data and prepares monthly reports containing relevant student information, working with technology and institutional research services to access, store, and retrieve data.
  • May assist with studies of retention and attrition data to identify trends and potential solutions.
  • May update the Student Equity webpage content to keep students and staff informed about activities. Coordinates specially targeted activities that contribute to the college's student success and retention goals. Outreaches to local schools to promote student services.
  • Assists in the planning of student orientation events and activities throughout the calendar year.
  • Assists with research of successful college/university student support programs to identify and apply best-practices and events used to support student onboarding. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:
The position requires working knowledge of the concepts and legislation applying to student success programs including orientation, assessment, enrollment, advising, and retention strategies. Requires basic knowledge of data-driven methods to identify students who may be at risk of not continuing. Requires working knowledge of the transfer and occupational programs offered through higher education. Requires working knowledge of enrollment policies and procedures, graduation, and certificate requirements. Requires knowledge of and skill at using personal computer-aided applications for office productivity, data management, and preparation of communications materials. Requires sufficient math skills to read and understand basic statistical concepts and data relationships. Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using English grammar for written communications. Requires well-developed human relations skills to make presentations to student audiences, convey college life advantages, exercise patience, and facilitate discussions with students and faculty.


Abilities:
Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position with general supervision. Requires the ability to provide academic, campus social and career-related information and assistance to students. Requires the ability to learn and apply special computer applications used with student services, policies and procedures of the College, and goals set for student success and support programs. Requires the ability to assist with research, identify and organize data that contribute to understanding student success. Requires the ability to interview and develop working relationships with students. Requires the ability to apply motivational interviewing techniques with students to encourage their engagement with higher education. Requires the ability to apply principles of positive reinforcement and goal setting. Requires the ability to access and document student files and ensure privacy of information. Requires the ability to communicate in a professional manner, in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff. Requires the ability to respond to a diverse set of cultures, ethnicities, socio-economic groups, and their interests.

Education and Experience:
The position typically requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in guidance or counseling and 2 years of program-based experience, working with student-centered programs, community, and college resources, preferably in a college setting. Additional post- baccalaureate education may substitute for some experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for this position.

Licenses and Certificates :
Requires a valid driver license.

Physical Abilities:
The incumbent functions indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires ambulatory ability to sit for extended periods of time, to use computers and related media, accomplish other desktop work, and to move to various school campus locations. Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Requires the ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground
level files. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a computer, pointing device and keyboard at an acceptable rate, and to operate other standardized office equipment, requiring repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
Conditions of Employment

This is a temporary, full-time, categorically-funded, 12-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with the flexibility to work weekends, evenings and early mornings when necessary to meet the demands of the department.
