Department of Teacher Education, Teacher Education Division, College of Education

The Teacher Education Department is one of two programs within the Division of Teacher Education in the College of Education. The vision of the College is to maintain a model of collaborative urban educational excellence. In partnership with P-14 schools, we prepare deeply knowledgeable education professionals who are passionate about helping students reach their full potential and who make urban schools the places where children, families, and teachers thrive. Accredited by NCATE and CTC, the College is recognized for preparing teachers, administrators, counselors, and other specialists who work effectively with a variety of learners from diverse backgrounds, especially those living in poverty.

The Position

This position is to provide academic leadership in the field of bi-literacy and dual language programs.

The candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience as a successful TK-12 school teacher in urban school environments with linguistically, culturally, racially and economically diverse students, as well as, an understanding of the California Common Core State Standards-Español and the Dual Language Principles.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for leadership across Dual Language to include:
- Bilingual Multiple and Single Subject Credentials;
- Bilingual Authorization pathways (including Special Education);
- Master of Arts;
- Program Certificates; and
- Developing professional development partnerships with local districts.

Teaching responsibilities include:
- Expert teaching through face-to-face, online or hybrid delivery of bilingual education courses in the credential and master's programs with a critical pedagogy and social justice perspective;
- Collaborating with faculty and public school partners in the development, review, and assessment of dual immersion programs;
- Assisting with promoting Teacher Education programs and recruiting students;
- Assisting the department in leadership roles with operational and committee work; and
- Assuming college and university committee responsibilities.

Primary research responsibilities include:
- Active research agenda in dual language;
- Seeking and acquiring external federal funding;
- Publishing scholarly work; and
- Disseminating work to national and international audiences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate;
  • Spanish proficiency to teach, publish, advocate, promote and inform the development of dual language education programs and research;
  • Record of a minimum of 5 years TK-12th classroom teaching, program coordination, leadership and/or professional development;
  • Must be able to work collaboratively to prepare bilingual teachers in Spanish to meet the challenges for teaching in the 21st century;
  • Experience teaching courses at the post-baccalaureate and/or graduate levels: Spanish literacy methods and/or content specific to bilingual teacher education.
  • Evidence of an active research agenda, scholarship and publication in English or Spanish;
  • Experienced in writing, directing or participating in externally funded projects;
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and interpersonal skills to work within a collaborative and diverse team environment.
  • Experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

    Preferred /Desired Qualifications
  • Experience as a Department Chair;
  • University teaching experience in research methods, curriculum theory and development;
  • Evidence of leading and mentoring linguistically and culturally diverse pre-service teachers and supporting their efforts to teach for equity and social justice;
  • Manage projects designed to address the shortage of Spanish bilingual teacher candidates with certification;
