Farm Coordinator / Veterinary Tech Support

Farm Coordinator / Veterinary Tech Support
Portland Community College

Best Consideration/Close Date:
Are you passionate about animals, farms, and education? Portland Community College's Rock Creek Campus is looking for a Farm Coordinator to run its farm and support the Veterinary Technology Program's animals.

The farm coordinator provides overall care for veterinary technology program animals and maintenance of the campus farm. This is a critical set of responsibilities that impacts animal welfare, community relations, program health, grounds use, and other considerations. In addition to the Veterinary Technology program, the farm coordinator also supports the campus' public relations efforts and other farm-related programs such as: The Learning Garden, Landscape Technology Program, and Environmental Studies Center. The farm coordinator works with other PCC staff and a wide array of contacts outside PCC as well. The Farm Coordinator also manages a farm shop and all farm facilities and equipment, directs activities of farm staff, and assists in the financial operation of the farm.
The ideal candidate would be a person with significant (at least 3-5 years) experience working and/or supervising others in a farm setting and with a passion for education. Those with less experience, or in other similar positions (sustainable farms, production farms, etc.) are also encouraged to apply. While the position is a full-time 40 hour/week position, care-taking may require round-the-clock responsibilities depending on circumstances, therefore, for PCC's convenience the college has recently built a detached three-bedroom house on the Rock Creek Campus where the farm coordinator is expected to reside.Animals cared for at the farm include approximately 30 sheep, 20 cattle, 6 camelids, 2 horses, and 3 goats. The campus includes a kennel which houses up to 20 dogs and cats. The program has also housed guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, gerbils, hamsters, mice, and rats. Animal numbers vary from season to season and year to year. PCC's Veterinary Technology program conducts no animal research, but the use of animals in its educational program requires the department to follow the same regulations that protect animal welfare at research facilities. For example, the campus maintains an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including members of the public, which inspects all animal facilities and records regularly. The farm coordinator serves on the IACUC. Ideal candidates will have experience with such committees and with regulations around the institutional use of animals for educational purposes. This position will start as early as January 2019, to provide time working with the incumbent coordinator, who will retire at the end of June 2019. Specific Duties Include:
  • Assists the Veterinary Technology Program with instructional and other activities, especially involving large animals. Coordinates and communicates with instructors to assist in the preparation and management of livestock prior to and during laboratory sessions.
