The Department of Environmental Health (DEH), a world-renowned institution for environmental health and medical research, is seeking an environmental health sciences biologist whose research has a strong affinity towards community outreach and education.

This position serves as a Community Engagement Specialist for the Community Engagement Core (CEC) of the Center for Environmental Genetics (CEG), and supports the mission of the Center. The CEG is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and is housed in the University of Cincinnati-College of Medicine, Department of Environmental Health. The successful candidate will engage with local community members and organizations and have a strong comfort level communicating exposure science to the public and being the liaison between CEC and the lay community. The individual will report directly to the director of the CEC and be responsive to guidance from the CEG directors and core/project directors. The individual will serve as the point of contact for community members, advisory committees, and outreach personnel from other centers and projects. This position works closely and collaboratively with the CEG program coordinator.

Job duties for this position will include but not limited to:

  • Translate and disseminate Center research into environmental public health knowledge for target audiences (community members, health care professionals, and policy makers) in order to increase awareness and understanding of environmental health.
  • Advance community engagement through different models in environmental health, implementing citizen science practices, novel communication approaches and data disclosure.
  • Create and maintain CEC web page content and social media channels.
  • Foster multidirectional partnerships among CEG scientists and our target audiences.
  • Develop strong cross-Center collaboration with other NIEHS Centers to address community-identified emerging environmental issues.
  • Organize CEC meetings, manage students and faculty engaged in community-centered environmental health research.
  • Perform related duties based on programmatic need, some travel, weekends, and weeknights may be expected.


Minimum Qualifications : Bachelor degree with three (3) years of work experience; -OR- Associate degree with five (5) years of experience; -OR- seven (7) years of experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications : Work experience should be in areas related to environmental health science and/or public health; familiarity with community/citizen engagement and outreach; excellent oral and written communication skills; proven organizational and networking skills, enthusiasm, energy and passion for environmental health, and the ability to use PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Social Media, and other communication tools.
