System President/CEO

The University of Colorado (CU) invites applications and nominations for system President/CEO. The President serves as the system’s Chief Executive Officer and leads a diverse, complex organization that positively impacts Colorado and beyond.

The University of Colorado is more than an institution of higher education. For almost 150 years, CU has served the people of the State of Colorado and contributed to its successes. The University of Colorado system plays a profound role in the lives of individuals, businesses and communities throughout the state, as it generates an economic impact of more than $12 billion each year in Colorado. CU advances the economy, health and culture not only of Colorado, but also across the country and around the world through its system of four campuses serving 67,000 students (with another 8,000 taking courses for credit), 35,000 employees, and through the 475,000 CU alumni world-wide (250,000 remain in Colorado) who have become leaders in science, business, arts, health and communities.

The University of Colorado comprises the University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Colorado Denver, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the University of Colorado Springs. CU’s four campuses feature top-tier faculty and an environment where student achievement is paramount. Each campus is led by a Chancellor, has a distinct statutory role and mission and is accredited separately.

The system President/CEO oversees the University of Colorado system and serves as the leadership and hiring authority for the campus chancellors, akin to the CEO of a complex enterprise with several interconnected divisions. The President identifies major system-level opportunities and risks and coordinates CU’s efforts to serve the state and beyond. As such, the President must have experience balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders and working with a governing board.

The President’s responsibilities include oversight of a combined system budget of more than $4.5 billion, including $1.05 billion in research funds across many disciplines. The President partners with and reports to a dedicated system Board of Regents and is responsible for enacting and implementing system-wide direction and policies on an array of issues affecting the academic, administrative and fiscal interests of the system.

The system President/CEO, working alongside the Board of Regents, campus chancellors, faculty, staff, students, university stakeholders, the Colorado community and its leaders, is responsible for engaging the university community and implementing a strategic and thoughtful vision for the future of the CU system. The next President will continue to strengthen the solid foundation of the thriving four-campus system and further its position as the higher education leader in Colorado and the nation.

As CU’s chief ambassador, the President engages with elected officials and policymakers at the state and federal levels, the private sector, and alumni, partners and affiliates. The President must facilitate collaboration and partnerships among public and private entities, be prepared to confront the financial challenges facing all of higher education, lead major fundraising initiatives for the university and foster relationships with the philanthropic community.
