The Search
The George Washington University (GW) seeks an inspiring and entrepreneurial leader to serve as Dean for the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). The Dean will assume leadership at a critical point in the school’s history. In the past 10 years, SEAS has improved in every dimension—from research expenditures to student recruitment to scholarly stature of faculty. The next SEAS Dean will lead a college that has enjoyed a decade of stable leadership operating within one of the nation’s great private urban universities. New opportunities for growth, including the impending arrival of Amazon, will dramatically change the technological landscape of the DC area. Surrounded by federal funding agencies, a variety of international engineering firms, and a burgeoning tech industry, and neighboring the university’s medical school and hospital, opportunities for the school to build transformational relationships abound.
The Dean is the chief academic officer of the school and will develop and implement a vision and strategy to achieve higher levels of academic distinction and impact. The Dean will benefit from the state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Hall that opened in 2015 and a university-wide commitment to increase collaboration and grow research. The Dean will work closely with departments to raise academic rigor while developing existing research themes that will distinguish SEAS.
Under new presidential leadership, the community eagerly continues its upward trajectory in becoming a preeminent comprehensive global research university. A member of this transformational leadership team, the Dean will bring together a dedicated group of faculty, staff, and students, who are engaged in outstanding scholarship and practice that aligns with GW’s academic and geographic advantages. To capitalize on this moment, GW seeks an entrepreneurial and inspiring Dean with a commitment to world-class research; a track record of promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion; dedication to excellent undergraduate and graduate education and student success; and the ability to represent the school compellingly to local, national, and international constituencies.
