Studio Manager

The full time Art and Design Studio Manager is responsible for leading the strategic Implementation, operations, maintenance and growth of the current and future specialized learning laboratories/studios created for the students who enroll in art and music classes offered by St John's College, Department of Art and Design. There are currently 15 laboratory/studio environments designed to foster technology, entrepreneurship and innovation across the University. The classes taught in these environments serve the university student population through core and elective courses along with the four BFA programs and one MA program.

This position plays an integral role involving working with the faculty in the integration of state of the art lab technology into the curriculum; thus, enhancing the quality of the education the students' experience. In addition, the position will provide developmental opportunities for the coordination of programs and resources between St John's College and the College of Professional Studies resulting in the offering of greater lab and technological resources to students in both schools.

Outcomes related to this position include the enhancement of the academic quality; provide coordination between Colleges; the improved research productivity of the faculty and students; and the overall improvement of the health and safety of all of the studios.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the strategic direction of the activities in the labs, by integrating the lab activities into courses, program and university-wide initiatives.
  • Development of technology-centric programming and activities to support Innovative academic programming.
  • Initiate activities and programs geared towards fostering a sense of community for student, faculty, and innovators pursuing ideas requiring technology and creative image-making.
  • Identify the latest technology at the center of labs evolution within the visual and performing arts; research technology providers and prepare and present proposals to applicable parties; and participate in purchasing of the systems.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to students, selected faculty, and administrative staff working on technology initiatives for incorporation into the labs and academic curriculum.
  • Create and present integration plans to Departmental Chair and/or faculty committees (P&B) for review and Lead the implementation, relating to the Innovation programs and assess outcomes and outreach efforts.
  • Work with Director of Technology Operations, College of Professional Studies, to provide coordination of new program initiatives and relating to equipment and lab/studio/classroom space.
  • Management of relationships with vendors and providers, as well as work closely with IT to coordinate so that lab systems are integrated with university system.
  • Oversees and assists students interested in innovation in the technology-driven sectors via office hours and ad hoc guidance.
  • Provide technological support and advice to faculty working on the integration of lab activities in the curricula
  • Provide technological support and advice to faculty using the labs for research activities
  • Oversee the daily maintenance and cleaning and upgrades of studio equipment and assisting with students' needs in this area; maintain the environment in full operation during peak hours
  • Oversee the daily overall studio environment;
  • Develop workshops for students and faculty to educate them on use of technology and when technical upgrades occur;
  • Liaison and contact person with the departments of Environmental Safety, Facilities and Design & Construction.
  • Hire and supervise departmental student workers assigned to oversee the labs and assist in maintaining technology and equipment.
  • Other responsibilities as requested by Department Chair.


Qualifications:

  • BA/BS or BFA required with appropriate technology/art qualifications; MA/MFA preferred.
  • Three to five years experience using lab/working in a lab environment preferred.
  • Applicants should have expert knowledge of Mac systems, 3D printing technology, Epson printers, and be able to profile and maintain printers.
  • Knowledge in art studio equipment maintenance such as analog darkroom, painting and printmaking equipment.
  • Familiarity with pedagogic approaches inspired to problem-based learning and design thinking.
  • Strong understanding of and passion for the latest technologies and technology trends.
  • Advanced skills in IT systems networking, server management, MAC, 3D and VR environments
  • Strong diplomacy, organizational and communication skills (verbal, written)
  • Proven ability to deliver results with minimal oversight (self-starter)
  • Ability to recruit, mentor and manage student workers.
  • High level of organization and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work extra hours, including evenings and weekends as needed by the activities
