The UC Histopathology Core Laboratory is a CLIA-certified, fee-for-service core facility in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The mission of the UC Histopathology Core Lab is to provide tissue histology services in support of clinical and research initiatives at the University of Cincinnati. The ideal candidate for this specialized position will under general supervision, process anatomical tissue and perform routine to complex histologic procedures to provide data on the functioning of tissues and organs and causes or progress of disease. Skills or interest in learning tissue processing and preparation for transmission electron microscopy, and assisting with ultrastructural examination and photography, would also be very desirable.

Duties:
  • Evaluate the suitability of tissue specimens for histologic analysis, includes determining the proper technical procedure appropriate in the preparation of specific specimens.
  • Prepare tissue specimens for analysis while ensuring that proper conditions are maintained, includes, but is not limited to accessioning, grossing, frozen section preparation, routine processing and embedding, microtomy, and cryotomy.
  • Perform histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and in situ hybridization, using both manual and automated procedures.
  • Select, develop, and perform non-routine and specialized staining procedures.
  • Mount, coverslip, and label slides.
  • Distribute, pull, and/or file tissue blocks and slides.
  • Perform tissue processing and preparation for transmission electron microscopy and assist with ultrastructural examination and photography.
  • Program, operate, verify, and maintain automated equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Collect, document, and maintain data/records related to daily procedures, quality assurance, and quality control.
  • Assist in the creation, revision, and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures to maintain compliance with CLIA and CAP.
  • Evaluate the reliability of methodology and recommend changes to improve practices.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining laboratory supply and chemical inventory.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment.
  • Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) and other laboratory and hospital safety standards 100% of the time.
  • Notify supervisor of unresolved issues or unsafe events.
  • Teach and instruct other technical personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degreein biological sciences or related field or equivalent level of knowledge.

Desired Qualifications:HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) registration.
