Resident Directors

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

Semester at Sea, administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education, provides undergraduates with a global voyage exploring and studying people, places, and cultures around the world. More than 63,000 students have studied abroad with Semester at Sea and its predecessor program since its founding in 1963. Semester at Sea is a non-profit 501c3 education organization. Colorado State University is the program’s academic partner.

Resident Directors (RDs) work with the Student Life team to ensure student success and to manage student crises. The goals for the student life team include:

  • Promote programs and services that encourage the achievement of student learning and development outcomes
  • Identify and find means to address individual, organizational, or environmental conditions that inhibit goal achievement
  • Continuously improve programs and services in response to the changing needs of students and other constituents, and evolving institutional priorities

Specifically, the position:

  • Is responsible for the general welfare of all students, and in particular, those students assigned to the RD's residential area ("sea")
  • Encourages students to maximize their intellectual growth and personal development
  • Is expected to positively influence, contribute to, and improve the quality of life of students through programming, community development activities, consistent enforcement of shipboard policies and procedures, and by forming appropriate relationships with each student in the RD's sea
  • Serves on a rotating "first responder" on-call circuit for situations that need attention
  • Manages a student worker assigned as a "student assistant"
  • Reports to the Dean of Student Life and is a member of the Student Life team
  • Prior to departure, participates in an orientation in Fort Collins, CO approximately 3 month before the voyage
  • Participates in regularly scheduled conference calls prior to the voyage
     

All RD's will be assigned a collateral assignment once they have been hired. These collateral assignments include the following responsibilities:

  • Advancement: The RD who oversees Advancement on the ship serves as the shipboard community’s alumni representative. This person has the primary responsibility of educating the shipboard community about the benefits, opportunities and responsibilities of being a SAS alumna/us and then encouraging the community to give back to Semester at Sea. This person has an outward facing role, with the distinct responsibility of representing Semester at Sea with VIP visitors and alumni constituents.
     
  • Wellness and Spirituality:  The RD for Wellness and Spirituality is responsible for designing and implementing prevention, education, and wellness programming to advance the health, safety and wellbeing of students and the entire shipboard community.  This RD also provides access to programs that enable interested students to freely pursue spiritual growth and development, as well as examination of the different religions students may experience throughout their travels.
     
  • Diversity and Inclusion: The RD who oversees Diversity and Inclusion promotes the academic and personal growth of traditionally underserved populations both on the ship and in the countries visited by providing educational programs and services that focus on: a) awareness of cultural differences, cultural commonalities, privilege, and identity; b) self-assessment of cultural awareness and possible prejudices; c) changing prejudicial, oppressive, and stereotypical attitudes or behavior. This role serves as the primary point person from the student life team for promoting Inclusive Excellence on the voyage.
     
  • Recreation and Sport: The RD who oversees Recreation and Sports programs on the ship including planning the Shipboard Olympics on the voyage.  Coordinate the fitness room schedule, intramurals and fitness classes.
     
  • Evening Scheduling and Student Organizations: The RD who oversees Evening Scheduling and Student Organizations on the ship serves as the primary point person for scheduling any meetings or programs after class hours (1820 – 0800) and providing support and guidance for student organizations on the ship.
     
  • Outreach: The RD who oversees Outreach serves as the primary resource and support person for Gap year students and students who are non-US passport holders on the voyage.  In collaboration with the Registrar, works with the interport student to connect them to the student community. Serve on the IMPACT scholars steering committee and provide ongoing support to them in developing programs and organizing student organizations around service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years full time professional experience in student affairs working with undergraduate students in a college or university setting, including
  • Master's degree in higher education and student affairs administration, or a related field
  • An understanding of how to promote student learning and academic success
  • The ability to create an environment where students feel free to ask questions and obtain assistance
  • Flexibility and a mindset of getting things done essential
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the capacity to relate effectively with Program constituents
  • Must be detail-oriented, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a complex and dynamic environment
  • Ability to exercise good judgment on a range of issues
  • Experience responding to emergency or crisis situations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of graduate or full-time residence life experience 
  • Experience advising student organizations
  • Has served in an on call capacity at an institution of higher education

RD's are required to live in their seas (student residential community) and will be allocated a double occupancy cabin. Due to this requirement, Resident Directors are not eligible to bring dependent children. However, Resident Directors are welcome to bring a spouse or partner with them on the voyage.

Each Resident Director earns a stipend of $5,000 paid in three equal installments during the voyage. They also receive a travel allowance of up to $1,500 for airfare and hotel accommodation through STA Travel and a taxable honorarium of $500, paid on the first installment.
