Job Schedule:Full-time
Minimum Education: Ph.D.2018-12-01

Faculty Positions: Multiple Disciplines

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Semester at Sea®, administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education, provides undergraduates with a global voyage exploring and studying people, places, and cultures around the world. More than 68,000 students have studied abroad with Semester at Sea® and its predecessor program since its founding in 1963. Semester at Sea® is a non-profit 501c3 education organization. Colorado State University is the program’s academic partner.

OVERVIEW:
For Fall and Spring voyages, approximately 25-30 faculty are hired from across many disciplines. Faculty members are hired based on expertise in their discipline, record of teaching courses with a global focus, and their international experience. All courses offered on Semester at Sea are regular Colorado State University courses.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In accordance with Semester at Sea’s curriculum, prepare and teach mutually agreed-upon courses.
  • Generally, faculty members teach three courses on a fall or spring voyage (15-week semester) for a stipend of $12,000, plus a travel allowance for hotel and airfare accommodations. Additionally, faculty receive a small taxable stipend to assist with incidental travel-related expenses.
  • Develop and lead in-country field classes for each course. The field class is an integral part of the Semester at Sea experience.
  • Give 2-3 presentations to the shipboard community.
  • Be available for student contact outside the classroom.
  • Participate in program evaluation

SEMESTER AT SEA® - A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE:
Living and learning with students on Semester at Sea® voyages is an exhilarating, exhausting, and challenging endeavor. It is unlike any living/learning experience that you’ve had, either on a traditional land campus or when leading a study-abroad course. The experience has a number of distinctive elements which include:

  • A small personal campus
You will be living and teaching/working in a floating residential college with up to 600 students, 25 lifelong learners, as many as 100 faculty, staff and their family members, in addition to up to 200 multi-national crew members. The ship’s community includes a generational mix of ages, from young children to octogenarians. On a Semester at Sea voyage you are expected to be accessible to students and staff during the day and evening hours.
  • The voyage has a rhythm
The rhythm of the voyage dictates your life more than a typical academic semester. Classes meet for 80 minutes on alternating “A” or “B” days almost every day that the ship is at sea. This includes Saturdays and Sundays. A wide variety of activities are offered when in port, ranging from required field classes to optional field programs and independent travel. Long ocean crossings allow for extensive class work, while shorter distances between ports can present challenges to instructional tempo. Planning instruction and work to this rhythm is imperative, as is understanding that students on Semester at Sea® voyages are generally active and engaged learners.
  • In-country learning opportunities
You will provide your students with the unique opportunity to observe first-hand the global and country-specific systems, issues, and traditions discussed in class. Content in Semester at Sea courses is tailored to each voyage itinerary. Faculty-designed field classes – an extension of the on-ship classroom – facilitate deeper understanding of course content. Teaching and learning are both enriched and enlivened through these educational and culturally-immersive experiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned doctorate or highest appropriate terminal degree.
  • A minimum of three years recent full-time undergraduate teaching experience.
  • A demonstrated record of teaching excellence to work effectively with undergraduate students.
  • A record of scholarly accomplishment in one discipline or equivalent professional experience.
  • Some international expertise/experience is preferred, especially in the ports/countries included on the itineraries.
  • The faculty member and any accompanying family members must have valid passports and visas for the countries on the itinerary.

APPLY:

You are invited to apply 15 to 18 months in advance of a voyage. Please submit your application through our website: http://www.semesteratsea.org/employment/.

Applications for Fall 2019, Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 Professor positions are now being accepted. The hiring process for the Fall 2019 voyage will commence shortly.
