Assistant Professor Early Film Studies

The Department of English seeks to a fill a position in the history and theory of early film.  The ideal candidate will teach and research silent and sound film before World War II.  Secondary interests in the literature and culture of the period between the world wars would also be welcome. Teaching responsibilities will include early cinema history as well as introductory, advanced, and graduate courses reflecting the candidate’s areas of expertise.

Candidates should have completed their PhDs by August 2019. The department is looking to hire someone whose interests and expertise will inspire our students, undergraduate and graduate, while also leaving a lasting mark on the scholarly community. Candidates whose interdisciplinary credentials might expand ongoing work at Rochester are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates may contribute to longstanding collaboration in teaching and research between the English Department and other academic departments as well as the George Eastman Museum and the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation. The standard teaching load is two courses each semester.
