Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant to the Vice President provides high level executive administrative support to the Vice President for University Relations. The individual in this position is responsible for managing the Vice President's schedule, making and coordinating all VP travel arrangements, responding to correspondence and email on behalf of the Vice President, preparing agendas and compiling necessary background information for meetings, completing or delegating all action items, managing routine tasks and serving as an ambassador on behalf of the Vice President's office, often being the first person of contact to multiple constituencies, both internal and external, including donors, vice presidents, deans, board of trustee members and volunteers. This person often handles confidential, difficult, and sensitive matters in cooperation with/and for the Vice President. Serves as a liaison for the Vice President with AVP and other members of the division.

The Assistant will be expected to develop familiarity and cultivate professional relationships with donors, prospects, trustees, Regents and other high level administrators who interact with the Vice President's office on a daily basis to be able to anticipate and resolve routine inquiries. He/she will compile data and prepare drafts of regular and ad hoc reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):

Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Experience:
Must have at least 5-7 years of administrative experience supporting a senior level manager. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of outstanding ability to organize complex material and manage logistical events; must possess the highest degree of discretion and confidentiality; and must have a clear commitment of customer service. In addition, the candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work independently and to interact effectively with administrators, faculty, students and staff. The incumbent must be able to satisfy competing needs and requirements of diverse interest groups and demonstrate a high level of problem-solving and decision making skills. Strong management, leadership and interpersonal skills are necessary combined with the ability to work well under pressure. Excellent oral and written communications skills are necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of and skilled in the application of office practices, procedures and equipment. Excellent oral and written skills. Knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar and math. Demonstrated ability to interact with students, parents, public officials and staff at all levels. Ability to effectively interact with government, legislative leaders, Members of Congress, State Officials, City and County Officials. Able to compile, collect and organize specific data as needed by Vice President; gather and consolidate data for reports with minimal instructions; and prioritize executive complicated and continuing assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, alumni and donors.

Preferences:

Knowledge of University Maryland System, University of Maryland College Park Foundation and University policies and procedures strongly preferred.

Physical Demands
