Job Summary:
This is a laboratory technician position that supports Sylvania Campus physical sciences laboratories (chemistry, geology, geoscience, physics) and provides support for some stocking and quality control (solutions, buffers, etc.) of the biology teaching laboratories.

Hours are: Mon-Thur 1:30PM - 9:30PM, plus some Friday hours.

The .65 workload is based on expected breaks between terms, and a reduced summer workload. The weekly work load, averaged over the year, is 26 hours per week. Opportunities to work additional hours is expected but not guaranteed.

Benefits will be prorated.

Responsibilities/Duties:
1. Works with faculty/instructional administrator to design, construct, modify or rebuild equipment, modules, experiments that will be used in the classrooms/laboratories in a division comprised of various related but different subject areas. Provides technical assistance to students, faculty and staff; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with equipment; may assist in setting up laboratories.

2. Coordinates the support activities of many laboratories; establishes procedures for the use of equipment, supplies, materials, software, hardware, machinery and other items used; insures that faculty and students are oriented to the proper uses of the laboratories.

3. Provides work direction for student helpers, work study students and staff; coordinates work schedules to insure coverage; orients new staff to the procedures and policies of the laboratories; trains staff in the safe maintenance and use of all equipment used in the laboratories; monitors performance and reports any problems to administrative supervision.

4. Acquires, maintains and inventories equipment, materials, supplies, written materials, software and hardware required for student instructional needs; performs repairs on equipment; checks out equipment, supplies, materials to students; maintains contact with appropriate vendors.

5. Maintains records of activities undertaken in the support of the laboratories which may include typing forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and/or written materials.

6. Provides for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratories or work areas; disposed of hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal; assists in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratories. Reports maintenance problems as they occur.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Satisfactory references and successful completion of the criminal background check are required to meet the minimum qualifications for hire into this position.

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in a chemistry, geology, geoscience, physics discipline appropriate to the instructional support.

Two years of experience supporting laboratory activities in the chemistry, geology, geoscience, physics areas are required; experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Must have proven communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform. Proven ability to lead others.

Special/Preferred Qualifications:
- Successful experience supporting teaching laboratories, especially chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Successful experience in a chemistry laboratory setting where speed, accuracy, and customer service are highly valued.
- Experience setting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Very high curiosity and interest in learning new laboratory techniques and new laboratory instruments.
Experience working in a team environment.
Experience supporting working relationships with full-time and part-time faculty and staff, as well as vendor contacts.
- Experience managing complex inventories.
Extraordinary tendency to be task-oriented and habitually tidy.
