Director, Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning

CONTEXT OF JOB:

The University of Delaware invites applications for the position of Director, Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning. Reporting to the Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, this strategic position oversees the Center, serves as a member of the University accreditation team for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and works closely with deans, department chairs and other academic leaders on instruction, assessment and program evaluation. The Director plays an essential role in improving and assessing teaching and learning in undergraduate, graduate and other educational programs across the University. The Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of effective programs to improve student learning outcomes by enhancing instruction and assessment throughout the University.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning, ensuring that CTAL creates and deploys professional development programs that are effective for improving teaching and student learning outcomes.
  • Oversee the work of, provide professional development for and evaluate CTAL staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment that enables CTAL staff to effectively meet the needs of its clients in a timely fashion.
  • Work with the Vice-Provost for Faculty Affairs on programming for new faculty orientation.
  • Provide staff support for the preparation of the University's accreditation reports for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; support all campus units in on-going Middle States compliance efforts; and ensure that the University is monitoring progress towards the standards related to student learning outcomes.
  • Develop strong partnerships with deans, department chairs and other leaders to address issues related to effective teaching and student assessment.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Technology Services and other Faculty Commons partners to develop programming, products and tools that enhance faculty development across the University.
  • Work with Faculty Senate committees on assessment of student learning - particularly related to general education objectives.
  • Provide guidance to academic units to ensure that student learning outcomes are assessed and monitored for undergraduate and graduate programs for Academic Program Review or accreditation self-studies.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral degree, preferably in mathematics education, science education, curriculum and instruction, instructional design, assessment or related field, with 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience directly related to professional development for enhancing teaching and learning and assessment of teaching and learning, preferably at the university-level.
  • The ability to work independently, strong interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills are critical. The position requires the incumbent to be able to effectively interact with senior academic leaders, department chairs and faculty.
  • The ability to develop professional development for postsecondary faculty that will improve student learning outcomes by enhancing instructional practices and deliver that professional development in ways that will engage faculty for whom teaching is one of many responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to communicate detailed data to different audiences clearly and effectively.
  • Familiarity with the policies and procedures of institutional and programmatic accreditation, particularly as they relate to assessment of student learning. Prior service on an accreditation evaluation team is desirable.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management; ability to develop, plan and implement short- and long-range goals
