Research Associate, Biological Sciences

CONTEXT OF JOB:

The mission of the University of Delaware's Department of Biological Sciences is to create and disseminate knowledge that increases our understanding of living organisms in the contexts of both normal biology and aberrant processes that contribute to disease or developmental abnormalities. This mission is carried out through original research, publications, and teaching students within the discipline and related scientific fields. This mission is strongly supported by the scholarly activities of our faculty, which focus on the areas of cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, neurobiology, and physiology.

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will participate in research to identify mechanisms that contribute to the regulation of blood cell development. A wide range of experiments involving whole-animal, molecular, genetic, and biochemical approaches will be carried out. The Research Associate will maintain a notebook describing experimental methods and results, participate in research discussions, and interpret research results.

MAJOR RESONSIBILITES:
  • Plan, organize, and conduct research using zebrafish and mice.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (dissecting microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel documentation systems).
  • Maintain mouse lines.
  • Participate in a lab rotation to carry out zebrafish husbandry, including checking water parameters and feeding fish.
  • Perform live and fixed sample confocal imaging for analyzing protein localization.
  • Perform biochemical techniques including Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, protein expression, and protein purification.
  • Maintains an inventory of lab supplies and equipment, reorders lab supplies, and tracks new orders of equipment and supplies
  • Maintains laboratory databases
  • Coordinates and supervises undergraduate work study students responsible for media preparation, plate pouring, and common solutions
  • Complies with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards and promotes workplace safety
  • Participates in laboratory meetings and presents scientific projects at departmental and national meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or other related field and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to organize supplies for laboratory.
  • Ability to maintain chemical inventories and laboratory safety data sheets.
  • Knowledge and skill working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data management and summation.
  • Experience with DNA sequencing and image analysis software.
  • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Ability to investigate, gather, and analyze data and draw conclusions from this data.
  • Ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.


ENVIRONMENTAL/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
  • Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
  • Accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
  • Must be able to work various and sometimes long hours due to the timing on experiments, including possibly weekends and evenings.
