PSYCHOLOGY AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT - Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The Department of Psychology and Child Development within the College of Liberal Arts seeks applicants for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Diversity and Organizational Behavior starting September 12, 2019. Candidates for the position must have a PhD in social psychology, organizational behavior or related field completed by the time of hire and demonstrated experience and interest in topics related to underrepresented populations. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.

Candidates must also show a strong commitment to teaching excellence and provide evidence of professional activity that keeps them abreast of knowledge and developments within their discipline. The position involves teaching courses in social psychology, organizational psychology, multicultural psychology, teamwork, and potential development of courses such as diversity within organizations and other courses as related to the area of expertise. Additional courses may include: research methods, introductory psychology, and other existing core or elective courses. Ideal candidates will possess a commitment to broadening the scope of psychology to include traditionally underrepresented groups, as demonstrated through one's research, teaching, and/or course content.

Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load is 12 units (three courses) per quarter, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development and correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service.

Cal Poly strongly values diversity and inclusion, especially in the classroom and among its areas of study. This position is part of a university-wide cluster of searches designed to increase curricular coverage of areas related to diversity and inclusion, as well as to promote inclusive teaching strategies across the university. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the university's goals in these areas.

The other searches are for positions in the following disciplines across campus:

  • African American History (104977)
  • Criminology and Gender (To be determined)
  • Elementary Science Education (104961)
  • Global Health and Multicultural Health (104973, pending)
  • Management and Human Resources (To be determined)

In addition to standard start-up packages, candidates selected through this diversity cluster hire will be provided $10,000 to support their work in diversity and inclusion. Once hired, candidates will collaborate with their dean and others to develop a plan for utilizing these funds for supplemental compensation, assigned time, or professional development activities.  Detailed information can be found at https://academic-personnel.calpoly.edu/clusterhire.
