Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs

Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs

University of California, Irvine

Irvine, California

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs (VCHA). This is a momentous opportunity for an accomplished leader to guide the continuing evolution of the campus as a renowned health science center, forging new frontiers in research, education, training, and patient care. Reporting to the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Howard Gillman, the VCHA will serve as the highest executive of the UC Irvine Health enterprise and have the primary responsibility for UCI’s clinical, educational, and related research enterprises, overseeing the Chief Executive Officer of the UCI Medical Center, six Associate Vice Chancellors, the Director of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, and soon to be four academic deans within the newly formed Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences. The latter will include the School of Medicine (which encompasses The Gavin Herbert Eye Institute), the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the School of Population Health. With a recent $200 million transformational gift from the Samueli family, this College will include a new building housing state-of-the-art technology, forming an international nexus for evidence-based integrative health education, research, and practice. This is an unparalleled opportunity for the successful candidate to oversee the University’s plans for a billion-dollar expansion in Health Sciences, including the creation and establishment of a truly impactful academic health science enterprise distinctive from its peers in the UC System, across the nation, and around the globe.

Founded in 1965, UCI is the youngest member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), and combines the strengths of a major research institution with the dynamism and ambition of an emergent campus. UCI is among the most diverse and fastest growing campuses in the country and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, and innovation. UCI serves ~35,000 undergraduate and graduate students and is home to more than 1,200 ladder rank faculty (over 200 of whom are from the Health Sciences) and over 12,200 staff members. Founded as an interdisciplinary campus, it boasts excellence across its arts and sciences core and in its professional schools. UCI is located in one of the country’s most diverse and economically vibrant communities, and is Orange County’s second-largest employer, contributing $5 billion annually to the local economy.

As the only University-based care provider in Orange County, UC Irvine Health is a multifaceted organization dedicated to the discovery of new medical frontiers, the teaching of future healers, and the delivery of the finest evidence-based care. UCI School of Medicine is ranked one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools for research by U.S. News & World Report, and is home to one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing continues its dramatic rise in the U.S. News rankings, placing 43rd among public schools and 66th overall (a leap of 16 spots over last year). UCI Medical Center has been rated one of the nation’s best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report for 13 straight years, and it is the only Level I trauma center, and Level II pediatric trauma center in Orange County.

A successful candidate will be an experienced and energetic senior executive with a strong record of interprofessional and integrative practices and activities, working within the complexities of competitive academic medical centers, and fostering a positive, productive culture across a large, complex operation.
