This position is based in the Department of Ophthalmology / Ocular Oncology Service of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The individual who holds this job will be principally responsible for collecting and summarizing clinical data abstracted from the medical records of patients evaluated and managed in the Ocular Oncology Service. This individual applies professional knowledge, skills and training to design and conduct experimental research work in Ocular Oncology.

Required qualifications for the position:
  • MD or PhD degree in a biomedical sciences or related field.
  • 1 year of research design experience, including analysis and abstraction of biostatistical data from medical records
  • 1 year of post-graduate training as part of an Ophthalmology medical residency or Ophthalmology research fellowship


Specific expected duties:
  • Independently, and in association with other researchers, designs, coordinates and implements research studies in the field of Ocular Oncology, focused on identifying clinical predictors of treatment outcomes and social factors related to identifying clinical issues and seeking care.
  • Oversees preparation and submission of investigational protocols and follow-up reports on approved investigational protocols to the University of Cincinnati's Institutional Research Board.
  • Generates data for research studies by reviewing medical records of patients in the Ocular Oncology Service and abstracting relevant clinical data for analysis.
  • Determines appropriate method of data analysis to evaluate research hypotheses. Assists in the design of complex data processing systems to analyze research data.
  • Analyzes research data and prepares research findings for publication and presentation at conferences
  • Assists in establishing protocols, criteria and research standards for the Ophthalmology department
  • Prepares status and summary reports of research progress upon request.
  • Responsible to evaluate issues and develop solutions to manage problems that may arise before, during or after a research study.


Reporting responsibilities:
  • The principal supervisor will be the Director of Ocular Oncology Research
  • Reports to his/her principal supervisor on a regular basis (weekly to monthly, as requested/arranged by the principal supervisor) to provide updates on the status of ongoing projects and receive instructions for future projects, as the supervisor may provide technical guidance
  • Performs a broad range of duties with minimal supervision


Performance evaluations:
  • The Director of Ocular Oncology Research will provide regular feedback on performance and will also prepare and submit an annual performance evaluation, as required by UC policies.


This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
