 The SSRC is accepting applications for a part-time, up to two-year Postdoctoral Researcher for its Understanding Violent Conflict (UVC) program. The Postdoctoral Researcher is encouraged to pursue his/her own research agenda but would be expected to dedicate three days/week (or equivalent) to the research agenda established by the UVC. The UVC aims to identify and better understand emerging actors, logics, and technologies of violent conflict, and further innovate and refine methods of field research in conflict-affected settings. This program, in partnership with institutions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, delivers experience-based findings on intractable conflicts from hard-to-access research sites and conflict perspectives that are often hidden from the view of international peace and development practitioners. In addition, this initiative has developed a major international fellowship competition on conflict research and houses the SSRC’s China, Africa, peace and security project. 

Qualifications

• PhD in one of the social sciences or a closely related field.
• Research or previous work experience and interest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo/Central African region (history, politics, peace and security, culture).
• Familiarity with and interest in major scholarship and academic debates in international relations,   peacekeeping and peacebuilding, international criminal justice, violent conflict, and globalization.
• Demonstrated capacity for research, interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, and effectiveness as a writer and editor.
• Skills in qualitative or quantitative research methodologies.
• Team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and respond flexibly to changing demands.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Attention to detail and high degree of professionalism.
• Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, QuickBooks, internet search).
• Foreign language skills desirable (French strongly preferred, Chinese Mandarin a plus).

 

Responsibilities

This is an opportunity to broaden knowledge and networks and to collaborate with leading researchers in reshaping intellectual fields.

Assist with UVC program development, including developing workshops and research concept notes.

Author and coauthor peer-reviewed, academic

Conduct literature reviews for developing program

 Conduct research in a multidisciplinary environment. 

Communicate research results through conference presentations or publications; may prepare and provide presentations for professional organizations, governmental entities, and the public.

Provide editorial and research support for UVC program director.

Prepare and draft grant proposals as well as grant narrative reports.

Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed, depending upon interest and capacity. 

 

Terms, Salary and Benefits

This position is part time, three days per week with a flexible work schedule. Must be able to work in the NYC office three days per week. Compensation is $2,500/month. This position is a part-time consultancy and does not have benefits.
