The VCU School of Education seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2018. This is a twelve-month term position in the Department of Educational Leadership. Join us in preparing students for careers that shape the future of PK-20 education.

The Department of Educational Leadership in the School of Education is committed to preparing leaders able to influence equity, excellence, innovation, and impact in urban and other high-need communities. By combining innovative research, teaching and critical reflection with authentic community engaged learning experiences, the department prepares leaders who can address crucial needs in culturally rich and diverse environments.

 

Position Description:

The Assistant Professor will demonstrate through teaching, service and public engagement the richness of diversity in learning experiences and integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research. They will teach graduate courses in educational leadership, work with master’s and doctoral students on capstones and dissertations, and supervise/mentor students as necessary. The professor will also engage in service to the department, school, university, surrounding community, and national/international professional organizations.

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • Earned doctorate in educational leadership or related field
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the graduate level
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Strong facilitation and problem solving skills
  • Deep understanding of and experience in urban or other high-need settings
  • Strong and applied commitment to diversity, equity and access as they relate to education policy, budget and systems improvement
  • Ability to build and leverage meaningful cross-sector partnerships with local school divisions for purpose of educating leaders who advocate for social justice
  • Experience with innovative programming around leadership for social justice
  • Evidence of involvement in and sensitivity to the needs of underserved and/or underrepresented groups
  • Evidence of how teaching or creative activity contributes to the core mission
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred

  • Experience with doctoral students including advising and/or chairing dissertations/capstones and serving on committees
  • Potential for program development in interdisciplinary settings
  • Experience with online delivery of instruction
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: politics of and resources related to educational equity, education policy at multiple levels of government
  • Academic and/or professional experiences at urban research universities or in serving communities and populations in urban and high-need areas
  • Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional services that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability
  • Evidence of collaborations with research centers and institutes and/or with community agencies
