Lecturer of Music/Director of Bands


Brief Summary:

Marist College invites applications for a term position in music. The Marist College Music Program has a full-time faculty of three, full-time administrative staff of two, and 22 adjunct faculty members who support approximately 450 (NON-MUSIC MAJOR) students that perform in 18 instrumental and vocal ensembles. Academic programs include Music Minors in Instrumental and Vocal Studies with varied course offerings in musicology that support our Minors as well as Marist's Liberal Arts Core. The Music Program is housed in the School of Communication and the Arts.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the Athletic Bands (Marist College Band & Spirit Team Marching Unit and Basketball Pep Band), Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony.
  • Teach music courses related to the candidate's expertise, including band courses (symphonic band and wind symphony).
  • Serve in a joint appointment as the liaison to the Office of Undergraduate Admission specifically for the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented, diverse backgrounds. Goals include actively recruiting outstanding diverse (non-music major) students at the local, regional, national and international levels for the band and orchestra program, and expanding the size, scope and diversity of the Music Program through creative and comprehensive musical programming initiatives, and other related admissions activities.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with the music staff and faculty, marching unit staff, athletic program, student activities, other campus agencies and professional music associations.
  • Foster a working relationship with local and regional instrumental ensemble directors.
  • Engage in appropriate service to the School, the College and the profession.


Qualifications:

Outstanding artistic accomplishments as both a concert and marching band conductor. Established reputation as a wind band teacher at the pre-college and/or collegiate level with a consistent record of creativity and/or scholarship. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding teaching of concert and marching bands; preferably be proficient in drill-writing and music arranging; and be knowledgeable of America's band history and its' repertoire. Ph.D. /D.M.A. preferred; Masters' degree required. Related work experience with student recruitment or diversity initiatives a strong plus.
