Assistant Professor, ASL Annual Adjunct

ASL Annual Adjunct

Annual Adjunct faculty are professionals with the responsibility of providing a quality learning experiences for University of Cincinnati students on an annual basis, as well as making contributions in service and scholarship. Annual Adjunct faculty report to the Unit Director and perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the School of Education. Annual Adjunct faculty will submit a work plan and their performance in the areas of instruction, service and scholarship will be evaluated on a yearly basis. Evidence of advanced proficiency in American Sign Language and English, expert knowledge in the linguistics of ASL, Deaf culture and language instruction are required.

INSTRUCTION
  • Follow the course or program standard design where prescribed.
  • Maintain, update, and utilize Blackboard course materials, including standardized assessments.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting. In situations where there is not a standard departmental syllabus, the Annual Adjunct faculty member shall create one that follows the prescribed institutional format.
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials.
  • Request equipment and other classroom accommodations in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives.
  • Prepare course lesson plans and all accompanying teaching materials before class.
  • Utilize active learning methods and use a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course, such as, cooperative learning, experiential learning, and critical thinking and reflective practice.
  • Become aware of and follow prescribed procedures for inviting guest speakers to class and/or arranging for field trips.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data, specifically teacher evaluations and student performance data.
  • Support students' learning goals by:
  • Focusing on student learning outcomes.
  • Taking into account the needs and abilities of the students.
  • Becoming familiar with academic and social support.
  • Making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences.
  • Maintaining the academic integrity of the college.
  • Making himself/herself available to assist student in achieving their learning goals.
  • Be aware of and recommend campus services to students as needed.
  • If it is necessary to miss a class, he/she will follow appropriate procedures by notifying the Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee and, if possible, by providing an alternate assignment.


SERVICE
  • Take leadership role in organizing Deaf-related events on- and off-campus;
  • Contribute to department initiatives;
  • Provide insights to the growth, development and direction of the program;
  • Host office hours (minimum of 4 hours/week)
  • Attend all SLI/ASL program meetings;
  • Exhibit the following character in their work, both in and out of the classroom:
  • Motivation and productive work habits;
  • Commitment to excellence as expressed in the College mission, vision and values;
  • A positive, cooperative and supportive attitude toward others;
  • Situation-appropriate professional attire;
  • Reliability when performing assigned tasks.


SCHOLARSHIP
  • Maintain current in their practice participating in professional development opportunities and keeping abreast of ongoing developments and practices in his/her professional content area(s).
  • Engage in campus learning opportunities, such as those offered through CET&L.
  • Participate in University and College-wide committees when and where possible.
  • Participate in community events representing the program, College and University.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Deaf Studies, ASL, Deaf (Hearing Impaired) Education, Special Education, Second Language Instruction, Interpreting or another related field or a Specialization in any of these areas.
  • One year minimum teaching experience at the college/university level
  • Evidence of advanced proficiency in American Sign Language (ASLPI > 4.0 or SLPI >Superior)
  • Expert knowledge in the linguistics of ASL, Deaf culture and second-language (L2) instruction are required.
  • ASLTA Certification is preferred.


Justification

The Dean of CECH, Lawrence Johnson and School of Education Director, Samuel Stringfield, has approved this position.

While we are constantly looking for new talent to bring onto our adjunct staff, we have exhausted the pool of qualified ASL instructors in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. The creation of this position will allow us to assign more courses to each instructor. Annual Adjuncts will be assigned a 4/4 workload.
