Manager of Space Planning, (Renovations and Facilities, Facilities Professional



Under the general direction on the Chief Operating Officer of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), provides a high level of coordination and expertise for the planning and development of CLAS construction projects, renovations and space management. Becomes an integral part of renovation/design/construction teams to represent faculty interests. Incumbents in the position are also required to develop, implement and maintain a space information system that assures accurate physical space utilization and inventory of all the buildings occupied by CLAS at the Storrs campus (18 buildings) as well as CLAS space at the regional campuses (including Marine Science at Avery Point and Dept of Public Policy in Hartford).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Space Management

Develops, manages, maintains and updates a complex computerized asset management system and databases to facilitate and expedite the usability, accuracy, integrity and availability of data for CLAS building planning and space utilization purposes.
  • Work with individual departments to understand room usage
  • Develop plans to maximize room utilization
  • Maintain database of future space needs and solutions
  • Respond to various requests for reports and documentation concerning the functional use of facilities and space to assist College in long range planning
  • Keep abreast of technological developments, which are related to the development or modification of computerized systems; review, evaluates and recommends support tolls software and related technology

Renovation Management
  • Develop and maintain commitment list of all CLAS renovation and construction projects
  • Work with Academic Renovations to oversee project development and construction schedules
  • Contact Department Heads about incoming faculty members, identifying space needs and solutions
  • Identify areas of CLAS space that should be on planning lists for future renovations
  • Serve as point of contact for post occupancy requests from end-users during project closeout

CLAS Representative to Design Development and New Construction
  • Represent CLAS faculty in design development, schematic design and construction meetings
  • Act as a liaison between faculty and architectural team, insuring that the team talks to the right faculty, that the faculty needs are heard and addressed
  • Negotiate competing department space needs and wants
  • Be aware of university standards and help faculty understand them as well
  • Work with design team on building finishes and furnishing needs

CLAS Facilities Representative
  • Work with facilities to manage building maintenance and repair for all CLAS buildings
  • Provide support to building managers if their issues are not resolved

Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, planning, building construction technology or closely related field
  • 4 years experience in space planning, construction and /or design management of buildings
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability to manage computer-based facilities and space management systems, including the use of GIS and CAD
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, University planning and construction teams as well as architectural teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of Space Management
  • Considerable knowledge of University facilities, space inventory and management
  • In-depth knowledge of AutoCAD, Archibus, Adobe Photoshop, web-editing, Microsoft office and windows products
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints
