Vice President, Communications and Marketing

Position Summary:

As a member of the President s cabinet at this top Research 1 institutions, the Vice President for Communications and Marketing serves as the Tufts University s chief communications officer.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for University Relations, the Vice President will launch and oversee major initiatives to bolster the university s reputation, garner international visibility, and generate revenue to advance the mission of Tufts University. Working in partnership with the Office of University Advancement, the Vice President will create communications and marketing plans to encourage alumni engagement and philanthropic support. In collaboration with school-based communications professionals and the Office of Business Development, the Vice President will lead efforts to promote enrollment in graduate, professional, and non-traditional education programs.

In conjunction with the Office of the President and other executive leadership, the Vice President will develop and promote a university-wide message platform, including writing and editing opinion pieces for higher education and other media. Responsible for overseeing issues management and crisis communications, the Vice President will stage regular table-top exercises and act as the chief Public Information Officer.

The Vice President will direct the work of professional staff in four departments editorial, public relations, marketing, and planning and operations ensuring collaboration for maximum efficiency. The Vice President will establish annual objectives for staff and the departments, measuring effectiveness against goals.

The Vice President will work collaboratively with school-based communications staff to develop plans to support the objectives and strategic goals of the university s eight schools and major university centers.


Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor s Degree in directly related field with 15 years of communications and marketing experience within a complex organizational setting. Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience evaluating, directing, and overseeing a team of communications and marketing professionals, with demonstrated ability to recruit, develop and motivate a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to garner, prioritize and disseminate communications in a strategic and creative manner; ability to provide leadership, management and strategic planning for the department.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, aligning department objectives and strategic plans with the mission of the university.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Superb oral and written communications skills. Strong consensus-building, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to advise senior leadership, partner with constituents throughout the university, and work together toward common goals. Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining a change management methodology in a complex organization. Ability to develop change management plans, communications strategies, and measurement systems to track adoption rates and success.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive university information.
Preferred:
  • Academic or related work experience.
  • Advanced degree.
