Assistant Director of Equal Opportunity & Access

Following the retirement of a long-term staff member, the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director of Equal Opportunity & Access. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Assistant Director of Equal Opportunity & Access is responsible for providing leadership of campus engagements and operations of the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access. This position provides instrumental leadership in the administration of a model EO/AA office, responsible for ensuring compliance with Federal and State equal opportunity laws, as well as enforcement of related University programs and policies.

The Assistant Director of Equal Opportunity & Access is responsible for administering institutional non-discrimination policies and Affirmative Action programs. The Office of Equal Opportunity & Access, within the division of Equity, Inclusion, & Community Impact, is a dynamic, well-regarded campus resource, leading University efforts to enhance cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusive excellence.

Characteristic Duties

  • Assist with the direction, management, and supervision of the operations of the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access.
  • Assist with affirmative action plan development and administration, including but not limited to: data acquisition, reconciliation, and analysis; advising managers and departments on best practices for achieving affirmative action goals; assisting hiring units develop recruitment plans and monitor applicant flow; and evaluating and reporting on good faith compliance efforts.
  • Investigate and/or assist in the supervision of investigations of alleged violations of University non-discrimination, anti-harassment, and conduct policies, including but not limited to: developing and implementing, in consultation with the Executive Director, investigation plans; conducting investigatory interviews; acquiring necessary evidence, documentation or other information; producing detailed, unbiased reports of investigation findings, conclusions, and, as appropriate, recommendations; and assuring compliance with institutional, contractual, legal, and/or policy requirements.
  • Administer and/or otherwise assist with institution-wide anti-harassment and non-discrimination compliance programs and activities, including but not limited to: developing and conducting training and other educational materials in a variety of accessible formats and forums; advising and consulting with University community members on the institution's commitment to provide an equitable and inclusive living, learning, and working environment; clearly articulating and modeling UC expectations for professional, non-discriminatory conduct; and ensuring implementation of effective and legally-compliant policies and procedures.
  • Continuously assess and stay abreast of current, new, and/or revised compliance requirements and best practices in equal opportunity and affirmative action, recommending in consultation with the Executive Director, practices, procedures, policies, or other actions necessary to compliance and institutional fulfillment of commitments to equity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate effectively with multiple university offices and community resources, including but not limited to: the Office of General Counsel; Academic Affairs; Student Affairs; Human Resources; and other institutional leadership ensuring compliance with institutional policy and applicable law.
  • Represent the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access as directed and/or in Executive Director's absence, serving various committees and acting as liaison to university units.
  • May provide direct supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Provide other services and perform additional, related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with five (5) years experience; -OR- Associate's degree with seven (7) years experience; -OR- nine (9) years experience.
  • Experience must be in equal opportunity/affirmative action compliance, complaint investigation, mediation, conflict resolution, legal services, compliance administration, human resources, student conduct, diversity & inclusion programming, or related feild
  • At least three (3) years experience providing direct and/or indirect supervision of staff;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity within an organization, team, and/or campus environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced educational attainment. (i.e., Master's and/or terminal/doctoral degree)
  • Demonstrated experience developing, administering, and/or auditing equal employment and affirmative action programs
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing investigation plans, analyzing policy/legal violations, and constructing appropriate investigation reports, notices, and related communications
  • Experience working in, for, and/or with an institution of higher education
  • Experience facilitating training on discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation
  • Demonstrated experience creating accessible, strategic communications, reports, websites, and other internal/external communications
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with persons of diverse identities, statuses, and/or cultural affiliations with effective conflict resolution, inter-group dialogue, and cross-cultural communication skills.
