ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, ADMINISTRATION

The University of Cincinnati (UC), Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and UC Health (UCH) have formed the Cincinnati Cancer Consortium (CCC) -a consortium designed to leverage the strengths of all three organizations in order to drive transformative research in support of the best possible cancer diagnostics, treatment, and care for individuals in the Tristate region and the nation, invites applications or nominations for the position of Associate Director of Administration .

The CCC combines the best effort and resources of three organizations, all situated within a one-mile radius of each other. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks CCHMC in the top ten Children's specialties, with Pediatric Cancer ranked at #5, and overall as #3 in the nation. UC, College of Medicine is ranked #40 in research, and #63 in primary care; and UC Health ranked high in adult procedures/conditions. These organizations are keen to establish a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center to serve the people of Cincinnati and the tristate area.

THE POSITION

Working with the Director, this position will be critical to establishing strategic and long-term plans for the CCC. Initially, the primary focus will be to work with the CCC Director and the external advisory board to complete the preparations in seeking NCI designation and help coordinate the submission of the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) application, and subsequent renewals. Reporting to the Director of the CCC and working in close collaboration with the Governing Board, the Deputy Director, and Associate Directors will provide strategic, administrative, operational and fiscal leadership of research facilities, information systems, and human resources including supervision of and administrative support for all CCC research programs and research cores. This position also works closely with the Marketing/Communications/Physician Outreach and the Director of CCC Development to form a senior management team that reports to the Director of the CCC.

THE CANDIDATE

Minimum qualifications for this position include: an advanced degree, such as PhD, MBA, MPH, or MHA, and at least ten years of experience in a biomedical, clinical, or health care setting and five to eight years in a supervisory/management role with a record of accomplishments. The successful applicant will have demonstrated proficiency in the area of process improvement and system redesign, preferably in an academic medical center. This individual should also have working knowledge of NCI CCSG reporting structure and application requirements. Working with the Director, the Governing Board, and Deputy and Associate Directors, s/he will assist with strategic planning and the development of cancer center research programs, inclusive of basic, translational, and clinical research directed at increasing investigator-initiated clinical trials, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing research and financial results, as well as monitoring and evaluating programs for improvement opportunities including those focusing on eliminating health disparity in the region. S/he will encourage and facilitate inter- and intra-programmatic interactions and multi-disciplinary initiatives, and provide leadership and direction for the CCC's financial operations including financial planning, budget analysis, monthly/annual operational and financial performance metrics, business plans, strategy and other finance-related matters. Participate in professional leadership activities, including community education programs, faculty relationships, professional association contributions and presentations on the state and national level.

In addition, the candidate will have the following competencies:
  • Decision Making: Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of multiple departments and centers/institutes, and to participate in decisions on overall strategy and direction of the CCC.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are broad, complex and abstract, often involving University/Medical Center-wide issues, and requiring substantial creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, skilled in negotiation and diplomacy to develop solutions.
  • Independence of Action: Ability to set direction and vision and ability to establish priorities develop policies and allocates resources.
  • Written Communications: Ability to communicate complex information effectively to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas.
  • Oral Communications: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts and address controversial issues.
  • Supervision: Ability to effectively supervise and mentor 6-7 CCC staff.
