Assistant Director/Program Director - Gen1

Program Backgrounds

The University of Cincinnati Gen-1 Program incorporates a housing component designed to provide program residents with a safe, orderly, and highly structured environment in which to live, learn, and work. The Gen-1 Theme House opened in 2008 to provide a 24/7 structured living and learning environment for a student population that is most at risk for dropping out of college. The primary objective of the Gen-1 Program is to provide first-generation, Pell-eligible, full-time students with the academic support needed to make a successful transition from high school to college and to complete a college degree within six years or less. The Gen-1 Program continues to provide academic assistance and support through graduation to those first-generation, economically disadvantaged students who remain enrolled in UC following successful completion of the Gen-1 freshman year residential experience.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

30% Advising and Counseling
  • Take an intrusive approach in advising students on program expectations and objectives; and in helping students acquire resources and skills for academic success. Advising includes purposeful academic planning for studnets who are at academic risk.
  • Manage communication to other advisors in the various colleges as necessary; collaborate with other advisors on complex student issues
  • Collaborate with departments on campus to serve student needs
  • Collaborate and support UC retention initiatives


25% Program Management and Execution
  • Contributein organizational meetings with faculty and staff directors on design, finance, and operational aspects of the program.
  • Help to plan, design and execute summer orientation and summer bridge programs. Programs includes presentations and on-campus cultural and social activities.
  • Hire and manage student staff
  • Coordinate and train student volunteers
  • Assist with day-to-day operations
  • Prepare/update program materials, communications, websites, newsletters, and presentations
  • Manage recruitment, application, and selection process.


20% Evaluation and Process Improvement
  • Manages the program evaluation and assessment of learning objectives and outcomes
  • Gather program data using the most relevant method (survey design, survey administration, focus groups, etc.).
  • Run reports, analyze data, present findings and recommendations to stake holders and recommend actions for future programming and continuous improvement.


15% Teaching
  • Develop, led, and support the Gen 1 living-learning community that integrates strength-based learning into the community's culture through co-curricular activities, mentoring, and a graded/credited course


10% Grant Writing
  • Coordinating and managing grant writing functions
  • Identify potential federal, state and private funding sources
  • Work with director to develop necessary grant proposals
  • Ensure compliance in grant budget record keeping and internal/external reporting


Required Qualifications: Bachelor degree with one (1) year of experience; -OR- Associate degree with three (3) years ofexperience; - OR-five (5) years of experience. Experience must be in student Affairs and/or working with underrepresented/disadvantaged youth in an educational setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with a diverse population, including underrepresented youth
  • Strong technology skills, including familiarity with a variety of software and web-based programs
  • Experience working for, in, or with Cincinnati Public Schools
