Assistant Director - Student Affairs Learning Assistance

Position Description: This position will provide leadership, planning, and day-to-day direction for all Learning Commons services that are not directly tied to enrollment; these include programming such as one-on-one tutoring and academic coaching. In addition, this individual will collaborate with Learning Commons staff working on STEM and writing support, first year programming, and embedded teaching supports across the university.

This position will also directly administer the Academic Coaching program and staff.

Assistant Director Responsibilities:
  • Directly supervise at least one Educational Advisor for Peer Tutoring.
  • Oversee the operations of at least one internal "Goal Team" focusing on an area of intra-office collaboration (i.e. Student Staff Development, Data Management and Technology, etc.)
  • Oversee operations within the Learning Commons main office, including organizational and technological systems (i.e. semesterly administration of TutorTrac, centralized admin processes for Learning Commons main desk and office, etc.) and office outreach.
    • Coordinate with Front Desk supervisor and Peer Tutoring Coordinator to maintain office consistency.
    • Identify and implement efficiencies with other Learning Commons programming and offices (e.g. shared hiring, cross-training)
  • Coordinate with partner offices to develop outreach and collaborative academic support programming such as academic alert interventions or transition and first year academic supports.
  • Serve as the liaison for implementing existing college Academic Alert, probation, and other at-risk student mandated interventions.


Academic Coaching Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate all Academic Coaching services, training, assessment, and promotion. Responsibilities include:
    • Oversee coaching services, programs, and staff
    • Design and implement training for staff;
    • Maintain national certification in coaching
    • Assess and report outcomes to relevant stakeholders
  • Direct supervision of student staff (i.e. performance evaluations, disciplinary action, leave requests, etc.).
  • Collaborate with relevant Learning Commons staff, advisors, and faculty to development and maintain the coaching program.


Additional Responsibilities:
  • Develop program objectives and corresponding assessment program. Collect and monitor program data, identify problems and solutions, develop clear goals and action steps for program enhancement.
  • Research and analyze relevant literature, benchmark institution information, and innovative practices in order to develop new program ideas, evidence-based training regimens, and center practices.
  • Assist in Learning Commons marketing, research, and staff development initiatives.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.
  • Contribute to two or more Learning Commons "Goal Teams" to facilitate intra-office initiatives.


Minimum qualifications: Bachelor degree with five (5) years ofexperience; -OR- Associate degree with seven (7) years of experience; -OR- nine (9) years of experience. Degree must be in a related field. Experience must be related. Experience also requires at least three (3) years ofsupervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years working in learning assistance, advising, or retention programming at the post-secondary level
  • Familiarity with literature around interventions for at-risk and first-year students, Motivational Interviewing, and/or or student motivation broadly
  • Facility with educational technology such as TutorTrac, Access Databases/Query software, and Blackboard (or other similar LMSs)
  • Past experience supervising professional or graduate student staff
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising undergraduate students in professional settings
  • An MA/MS in a relevant field
  • 2+ years working in higher education
  • Experience supervising or working with undergraduate students in professional settings.
