Please note this is a grand funded temporary position.

Job Summary:

The Postdoctoral Research is responsible for performing independent research on a US-DOE funded project on organic interactions at the mineral-solution interface. This position will run for 12 months with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2018 and a performance-based extension for an additional 12 months.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Creates experimental results by designing and applying modern analytical procedures.

Evaluates experimental results by purifying and analyzing products of synthetic experiments; investigating reactivity patterns and mechanistic detail.

Documents results by maintaining an organized and readable laboratory notebook.

Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards; adhering to legal regulations.

Ensures operation of tools and equipment used in the job by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.

Publicizes findings by developing and presenting results in conferences; providing periodic reports in oral and/or written form to direct supervisor and research group.

Maintains continuity among work groups by orienting and training new group members on procedures; documenting and communicating actions, irregularities and continuing needs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. in geology, chemistry, soil science, or a related STEM field.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Experience in organic geochemistry, biogeochemistry and/or sorption mechanisms.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of strong quantitative skills.
  • Knowledge of physical and/or surface chemistry.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and research techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to perform research and document results.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
