Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology

Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology
Department of Animal Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species.  Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health.  The Department’s 19 faculty members, many internationally recognized, have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, growth biology, and microbiology.

We seek a scientist to establish an independent research program with a focus on the biology of reproduction. The research direction should be towards understanding fundamental mechanisms of development and function in reproduction that may be geared towards applications to improve fertility and/or reproductive health in all species (animals and/or human). Our search is open to all relevant model systems (including laboratory animals and in vitro systems) that drive discovery and new knowledge of fundamental mechanisms. Research interest in comparative aspects of reproduction that could extend to production and companion animals is desirable. Beyond complementing existing research in the department and mission of the college, projects need to be competitive for extramural federal grant support and provide opportunities to achieve recognition through accomplishments in the discipline. Active engagement in mentoring graduate and undergraduate researchers will be integral to a successful program. Representation at national and international scientific society meetings will be expected to demonstrate excellence and allow for broad interaction with scientific peers.

The incumbent will be expected to teach an undergraduate-level Reproductive Physiology lecture/lab appropriate for animal science, biology and other life science majors. There will also be opportunity to develop an advanced graduate-level class in a relevant area of expertise.

This position is a 9-month research (50%) and teaching (50%) tenure track appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018 or as negotiated.

Support

Laboratory and office space to meet research needs will be provided in Morrison Hall. An excellent startup package will be offered. The laboratory will have access to all facilities at Cornell including the Biotechnology Resource Center (http://www.biotech.cornell.edu/biotechnology-resource-center-brc), the Cornell Stem Cell and Transgenic Core Facility (https://transgenics.vertebrategenomics.cornell.edu/) the Cornell Center for Animal Resources and Education (https://ras.research.cornell.edu/care/) and the animal units affiliated with the Animal Science department.
