Associate Dean for GME and DIO

Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO)

 

Position Summary:
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) reports to the Dean of the College of Medicine & Life Sciences through the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affiliation and also serves as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO). This individual, in conjunction with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), has authority and responsibility for the oversight and administration of all residency programs and for assuring that they are in compliance with ACGME Common Program Requirements, Specialty/Subspecialty-Specific Program Requirements, and Institutional Requirements. Effective management of financial resources is essential for success. 

The Associate Dean will be responsible for overseeing the quality of GME programs and maintaining strategic focus across all programs. Considerations include the development of physician workforce for the region and the recruitment and retention of high quality residents and fellows. It is expected that this individual will work across the University’s spectrum of undergraduate medical education into graduate medical education, and as such an aim will be to attract high quality medical graduates from our own, regional and national US medical schools into The University of Toledo GME programs.

It is expected that this position will require approximately 75% of the candidate’s time to be successful.  Some clinical, research or educational involvement is expected with the remainder of their effort.

 

Qualifications:
Applicant must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree with knowledge and experience of the delivery of care in hospitals and physicians’ office settings. Administrative experience in undergraduate or graduate medical education programs is required.  Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Strong ability to collaborate and commitment to teamwork. Current board certification in appropriate area of specialization. Good standing with all regulatory and governmental board and agencies.

 

Position Description:

·       Chair the Graduate Medical Education Committee

·       Operate the Office of Graduate Medical Education

·       Maintain current knowledge of ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements

·       Maintain current knowledge of, compliance with, and development of UT GME policies

·       Work collaboratively with the Dean, department chairs, and program directors in the areas related to GME

·       Support and consult with program directors to ensure a quality curriculum, adequate faculty development and support, and that diversity initiatives are developed and met

·       Oversee the preparation for the ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER)

·       Assist residency program directors with preparation for ACGME Self-Study site visits including preparation of the institutional documents for such surveys

·       Oversee the preparation for ACGME Institutional Self-Study visits

·       Maintain procedures to ensure review and signature of all program information including correspondence or documents submitted to the ACGME by the program directors that address program citations or change requests for the programs that could have significant impact on the program or institution

·       Collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affiliation at ProMedica Health Systems and other sites of training, in the implementation of residency rotations at ProMedica sites and ensure that the residency programs remain in compliance with all ACGME requirements

·       Collaborate with key stakeholders in strategic planning, development and implementation of a resident transition plan to ProMedica sites

·       Advocate on behalf of residents and residency programs in discussions with college and hospital leadership concerning support for residents’ academic and work environments, and residents’ well-being

·       Assist programs in addressing inadequate resident performance and due process

·       Engage in professional development applicable to responsibilities as an educational leader

·       Cooperate promptly with requests by various regulatory bodies for information or documentation

·       Present an annual report to both the Board of Trustees and organized medical staff of The University of Toledo

·       Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean or as outlined in the ACGME Institutional Requirements
