About the College/Department
The University Libraries system is comprised of David W. Mullins (main) Library, the Physics Library, the Chemistry and Biochemistry Library, the Fine Arts Library, and the Robert A. and Vivian Young Law Library. Combined holdings number over 2 million volumes. The libraries participate in the Greater Western Library Alliance, the Center for Research Libraries, and other state and national consortia. Library personnel ( FTE ) include 59 faculty and professional staff, 67 support staff, and 27 student assistants.
The Special Collections Department was created in 1967 to encourage research and writing in the history and culture of Arkansas and the surrounding region. The mission of the department is to acquire, preserve, and provide access to materials to support scholarly investigation of the state, its customs and people, and its cultural, physical, and political climate. Special Collections houses approximately 15,000 linear feet of manuscript collections, approximately 28,000 titles of Arkansas print material, more than 100,000 photographs, and about 10,000 maps and rare books, and the University Archive. Notable collections include: the papers of Senator J. William Fulbright, the Council for International Exchange of Scholar Records, the works of noted photographer Lawrence Larry W. Obsitnik, composers William Grant Still and Florence Price, writer John Gould Fletcher, and the Peace Links Papers. The Department is comprised of 11 FTE faculty and staff. Summary of Job Duties
The University of Arkansas Libraries is seeking a highly collaborative and engaged leader to serve as Assistant Head of Special Collections. This person will lead, shape, and assist in development and delivery of departmental priorities, through special projects to deliver innovative services, processes, and outreach. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, this position supports the Department Head in the daily management of the department (approx. 11 FTE ) through project management, assessment, and donor relations. The Assistant Head will participate in the department s Collection Development, Processing, Outreach, and Exhibition teams. Additional duties will include contributing to the Libraries growing digital collections, coordinating department events, and seeking grant-funded opportunities.
The successful candidate will join a department deeply committed to and engaged with its communities on campus and throughout the state of Arkansas. As a core component of the Libraries research enterprise, the Special Collections Department s strategic plan emphasizes its commitment to service, as outlined in its Guiding Priorities. Together, department faculty librarians and staff acquire and make available for research manuscript collections highlighting Arkansas and regional history; university archives, which documents the activities of the institution, its faculty, and its students; and a growing rare books collection. Through classroom instruction, exhibitions, and service, the department ensures the stewardship of the historical record for the University community and the public.
The Assistant Head will collaborate in strategic implementation of the department s priorities, including department programs, services, and spaces. Facilitates collaborative relationship building within the department, throughout the Libraries, and with community partners. Builds, executes, and coordinates an assessment program. Contributes to budget planning and management. Is responsible for the development and implementation of special projects in all functional areas including outreach and research services, organizing and describing collections, and collection development.
The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated leadership and coaching skills, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to think strategically and embrace change-management strategies. Additional key attributes are a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service; demonstrated ability to interact successfully with a variety of constituents; demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively to develop productive partnerships within and across complex organizations like the Libraries and University; focused attention to details, deadlines and goals; and a working knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis.
Responsibilities of this position include research, creative work, and service in keeping with the faculty requirements of the University of Arkansas. The successful candidate must have documented accomplishments commensurate with the criteria for appointment at the level of Associate Librarian / Associate Professor. A dossier will be required for appointment and hiring.
Tenure-track, twelve-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Librarian / Associate Professor.

  • Master s degree from an ALA -accredited program; or related advanced degree and ACA certification
  • At least 4 years of professional experience working in a cultural heritage institution with increasing management experience
  • Demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archival collections
  • Demonstrated experience with archival and library standards and tools, such as EAD , MARC , LCSH , and DACS
  • Demonstrated experience providing innovative public service, specifically reference and instruction
  • Experience contributing to physical exhibitions
  • Experience contributing to digital collections


Preferred Qualifications
  • Second advanced degree
  • Working knowledge of budget processes
  • Experience with grant writing and administration
  • Experience in donor relations and cultivation
  • Experience working with ArchivesSpace, Preservica, AEON , Archive-It, or equivalent tools
  • Working knowledge of digital repository systems and digital curation
