Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Division Manager, plans and facilitates the implementation of online course accessibility standards by conducting course reviews, providing faculty training, testing interactive learning materials, and coordinating the conversion of printed, digital, video and multimedia material into a variety of alternate media formats to meet Web Accessibility Guidelines. Interprets and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws as they apply to disability and accessibility in post-secondary online courses. Functions as a resource for staff and faculty throughout the college by providing technical assistance and guidance on how to accommodate and ensure equal access for students in online courses.

PCC is a recognized leader in online course accessibility. As part the Distance Education team, the Accessibility Advocate increases equitable student success by collaborating with faculty, administrators, and staff to ensure the accessibility of online courses. The Accessibility Advocate coordinates support services and helps strategize and implement priorities that align with department and college goals. This scope of work includes:

- Faculty training & consultation
- Reviewing newly developed online courses
- Testing of software, hardware, and processes for accessibility
- Operationalizing compliance legislation and requirements
- Promotion of universal design practices
- Working with external vendors to improve platforms to support students
- Collaborating with internal and external users to champion equitable educational opportunity

Responsibilities/Duties:
Responsibilities/Duties
1. Acts as the primary resource for faculty in the development and delivery of new online learning courses that meet accessibility standards and learning outcomes; ensures alignment of courses with Web Accessibility Standards.
2. Reviews courses, documents findings, makes recommendations, and facilitates accessibility of existing online courses; consults with faculty in course development, revision and accommodations processes; directs faculty to accessible course materials.
3. Analyzes course design to ensure course materials and media are accessible and/or equally effective options are available.
4. Designs and presents faculty development programs, seminars, networks, and processes related to accessibility; trains and consults with faculty in the creation and selection of accessible online course materials and accessibility standards.
5. Collaborates with Online Learning, Disability Services, and other College staff to produce appropriate and accessible instructional materials; recommends solutions, provides support, engages faculty, and resolves problems related to course accessibility and barriers to academic success.
6. Makes recommendations regarding compliance with local, state, and federal laws; stays current on disability legislations, regulations, emerging access issues in higher education, online learning, education trends, changes and developments, and online teaching strategies. Participates in state and national associations as appropriate.
7. Coordinates accessibility testing of software and works with end-users, vendors, and service providers.
8. May act as lead worker to classified and casual staff; provides input to supervisor for performance evaluations and interviews and recommends hiring of student and casual workers.
9. Coordinates the conversion of printed, digital, video or multi-media material into a variety of alternate media formats to meet Web Accessibility Guidelines.
10. Assists in the development of policies, practices, and standards which facilitate the effective use of accessible online learning technologies and instructions.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Education, Rehabilitation, Social Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Instructional Technology, Online Education, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Two years of experience evaluating and adapting online materials to meet accessibility standards. Two years of experience working with faculty or staff in a professional capacity in a post-secondary institution (includes employment as a student worker).

- Applicable federal and state laws, policies, regulations, and standards;
- Principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of universal design;
- Standards, requirements, and regulations regarding confidentiality of information;
- Principles and practices of medical, psychological, and technical evaluations of disabilities;
- Community resource for people with disabilities.

Skill in:
- Developing and delivering specialized consultations and training;
- Analyzing requests for reasonable accommodations and developing and implementing plans;
- Effectively communicating complex technical matters both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences;
- Project management and problem solving including communication, organizations, facilitation and independent decision making.

Able to:
- Work effectively with diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff;
- Design and present faculty development programs;
- Work collaboratively with faculty in diverse disciplines;
- Communicate effectively in oral and written formats;
- Work independently with little supervision;
- Learn new software.

7. Demonstrated experience effectively organizing, appropriately documenting, and completing projects in a timely manner.
