Summer Fellowship

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan has two summer fellowship opportunities for underrepresented students in the environmental field: the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP) for undergraduates and the Environmental Fellows Program for masters and doctoral students.

The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at University of MIchigan (DDCSP UM) is an exciting two-summer research and internship opportunity for bright, curious undergraduate students interested in conservation, nature, and the environment. The program is aimed at bringing more undergraduates currently underrepresented in the environmental field into the conservation arena. In the first summer, students work on research projects with UM faculty, while in the second summer they work in a local environmental organization.

  • Create mentoring relationships with University of Michigan faculty and researchers
  • Network and develop relationships with the conservation and environmental community of Ann Arbor, Detroit, and the rest of Southeast Michigan
  • Explore connections between conservation, social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Connect with other undergraduates passionate about conservation and the environment

  • Travel to field sites around Michigan
  • Eight-week conservation-focused research and internship opportunity (for two consecutive years)
  • Community service activities in Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Flint.

The Environmental Fellows Program is a national program that seeks to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the environmental and philanthropic sectors by supporting the career aspirations of graduate students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds and those committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The summer fellowship placements are available in a wide-range of cities and focus on such topics as: energy, environmental education, conservation, environmental justice, public health, marine stewardship and many more!

  • A 12 week paid fellowship in the environmental field
  • $10,000 stipend plus a travel allowance
  • Summer placement sites with the Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA) and their member organizations, including environmental grantmaking organizations, mainstream NGOs, environmental justice nonprofits and policy institutes
