Opportunity: Kent State University’s College of Communication and Information (CCI) seeks an innovative, experienced and high-energy communication professional to lead its communication, branding and marketing efforts. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and a media-savvy, creative and collaborative leader. CCI is the only college in the nation that houses media, communication, design, information and technology disciplines under one umbrella. The Director for Strategic Communications and External Affairs in CCI reports to the Dean and is a member of the college’s leadership team.

 

The Director of Strategic Communications and External Affairs will assist the Dean and members of the leadership team with setting the college's vision and leading the execution of a core messaging, branding and marketing strategy that advances the college's strategic vision, mission, and goals regionally, statewide, nationally and internationally.

 

Qualifications: In addition to holding a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study and 8 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing and/or external affairs, key qualifications include:

  • A strong record of leadership that demonstrates high standards and professional excellence;
  • A thorough understanding of, and experience in, developing and implementing branding and strategic marketing plans, in both traditional and new media;
  • Ability to persuade and advocate for CCI and for the ideas, images and approaches that best promote the college and the university’s mission, vision, core values, strategic agenda and reputation for excellence;
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity;
  • An open, collaborative leadership style that promotes strong relationships across all of CCI’s programs and units;
  • Responsiveness and flexibility, with the ability to manage competing priorities, interests and projects;
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor staff, as well as student workers and interns.

 

An advanced degree and knowledge of, or experience working in higher education is preferred but not required.

 

CCI is a dynamic college with five schools and two service units. College enrollment is approximately 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students across the Schools of Communication Studies; Digital Sciences; Information; Journalism and Mass Communication and Visual Communication Design. IdeaBase is the college’s student-led design agency located in downtown Kent. TeleProductions provides a wide range of video production and media services across the campus.

 

CCI programs have achieved national distinction. The School of Information is ranked nationally in the top 20 (#19 in U.S. News & World Report and #11 in Best Schools). Students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication finished in the Top 10 in the annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program for nearly a decade. Our independent Student Media is one of the largest in the nation and is frequently honored for excellence. Most recently, our general-interest magazine The Burr was the national winner in the Best Student Magazine category of the National Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the College Media Association gave The Kent Stater the Newspaper of the Year Pinnacle Award.
