ESL Coordinator – Tenure Track Full Time Faculty

Summary

This position is a full time faculty position reporting to the Department Chair and charged with teaching ESL courses, management of the College’s ESL credit courses, and coordination with the ESKL noncredit program. The ESL Coordinator will help lead the alignment of the ESL curricula and processes to facilitate and support student success and transition to College.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruct college and developmental ESL courses with release time for administrative oversight and program related responsibilities.
  • Create, evaluate, and review credit and non-credit ESL curriculum.
  • Assist with the hiring, mentoring, evaluating of ESL credit and non-credit faculty members.
  • Align non-credit curriculum and transitions with college programs and courses.
  • Serve as a liaison between adult education, community organizations, and the college ESL program.
  • Support the transition/development in other focus areas, including: CTE, Basic Skills, and Adults with Disabilities as they relate to ESL.
  • Attend ESL and department meetings and participate as an active member of the English and Humanities department as well as a member of the ESL non-credit team .
  • Assist in curriculum, certificate, and program development including committee work.
  • Participate in assessment and placement activities, including holistic scoring of writing samples, test validation, student learning outcome research.
  • Initiate and/or participate in special projects and grants.
  • Assignment may include day or evening hours  
  • Participate in general faculty functions related to the education program and in-service programs.
  • Maintain currency in discipline.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in TESL, TESOL, or a related field with a TESL emphasis.
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent and successful teaching experience in ESL including experience in varied levels of ESL from basic skills through college-preparation courses, including writing.
  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, community college experience preferred.
  • Ability to implement, lead, and manage the program, curriculum, staff, policy and procedural changes.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diversity of community college students, including but not limited to diversity relating to academic preparation, socioeconomic level, age, religion, ethnicity and culture, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.
  • Experience in Credit and Non-credit ESL programs.
  • Coordination experience a plus.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Knowledge of ESL teaching methodologies, language acquisition theories and ESL instructional materials.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding ESL testing, validation, placement methods, and program review including measuring student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated course work and/or conversational fluency in a foreign language Bilingual Spanish Preferred. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
