CHIEF STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICER

CHIEF STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICER
AMHERST COLLEGE
Amherst, Massachusetts

“We will continue to give special importance to the inclusion within our student body... We do so for the simplest, but most urgent, of reasons: because the best and the brightest people are found in many places, not few; because our classrooms and residence halls are places of dialogue, not monologue; because teaching and learning at their best are conversations with persons other than ourselves about ideas other than our own.”

Amherst College Trustees' Statement on Diversity

Amherst College, one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges, seeks a seasoned and strategic Chief Student Affairs Officer (CSAO) to lead the College's efforts to provide an exemplary student experience. The CSAO will be a compelling campus leader, a facilitator of cultural change, a builder of community, and a talented senior administrator of broad reach and high visibility.

Reporting to the President and serving as a critical member of her senior staff, the next CSAO has the opportunity to play a defining role in the experience of all Amherst students and to enhance the quality of life in the Amherst community. The position demands both inspirational leadership and a thorough understanding of the best practices in student affairs. Benefitting from - and building upon - the significant organizational gains of recent years, the next CSAO will think creatively and strategically about how to improve the Amherst student experience.

Success in this role will require working across academic affairs and student affairs to foster a fully inclusive community and a vibrant intellectual culture. The CSAO will demonstrate a steadfast commitment to equity and inclusion and an understanding that Amherst's diversity is one of its greatest assets.

Founded in 1821, Amherst College has a long tradition of academic excellence. Today, it is one of the most selective and diverse liberal arts colleges in the nation. It has a distinguished faculty of just over 200 teacher-scholars educating a student population of 1,849. Its exceptional students are drawn by the College's long-held commitment to educational excellence, intellectual rigor, access, and the diversity of its student body.

Over the past decade, Amherst has renewed its historic commitment to access and affordability with generous financial aid and aggressive recruitment strategies. As a result, Amherst's student body is one of the most socioeconomically, racially, ethnically, and internationally diverse in the country. As diversity has increased, the quality of the students has also risen by every standard measure. This combination of academic quality and student diversity puts Amherst in a unique position to rethink residential liberal arts education in order to preserve it for a changing population and an uncertain future.

The CSAO will bring the energy and interpersonal skills to develop programmatic innovations and to lead institutional change in a fast-paced and rigorous environment. This individual will lead the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), an organization delivering a complex array of services and programs, and will advise and collaborate with colleagues across the College on matters that shape the student experience and campus culture. Units within OSA include Case Management, the Class Deans, Community Standards, Counseling, the Health Center, Health Education, Religious Life, Residential Life, and Student Activities. The CSAO oversees a budget of $2.3 million and a staff of 110.

The CSAO search committee, co-chaired by Catherine Epstein, Dean of the Faculty and Winkley Professor of History, and Norm Jones, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, is assisted by the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller. Inquiries, nominations, and applications, which will remain confidential, should be directed to:
