Tenure Track Assistant Professor of National Security

The Department of National Security, Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice & Forensic Sciences, University of New Haven invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of National Security. This position may be cross-appointed with the Department of Criminal Justice at the discretion of the university. The anticipated start date for this position is January 1st, 2018.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Security Studies, Criminal Justice, or related field is strongly preferred. Other appropriate disciplines may be considered. Tenure-track positions require a Ph.D. A J.D. alone is not sufficient for this position. Ph.D. candidates very near completion of their degree (“A.B.D.”) may also be considered for the Assistant Professor rank. An appropriate record of scholarship or the clear potential to publish is expected. Considerable experience in securing and managing large-scale, externally funded projects is required. The department is seeking individuals with a demonstrable background in conducting sponsored research within the fields of national security, terrorism studies, and public safety, and should possess the track-record required to be designated as the project director on such initiatives. Experience in developing data driven approaches using advanced knowledge of data analytics is required for this position.

Position Requirements:

  • A focus in data science, including a strong understanding of relational datasets, data analysis, ETL processes, and data collection strategies.

  • Significant experience (5+) managing data collection and analysis efforts in a production / enterprise environment.

  • A background in conducting research in several of the following areas is expected: national security, terrorism, transnational organized crime, or international criminal justice.

  • Additional consideration will be given to candidates with:

  • Demonstrable history of collaboration with external partners (e.g. government agencies, law enforcement, and private sector).

  • Strong understanding of crime analysis approaches (crime mapping, trend analysis, network analysis).

  • Demonstrable history of providing “experiential education” opportunities such as internships, fellowships, or student employment within the field of national security and public safety.

  • Experience in developing, maintaining, and querying databases using enterprise level systems including MSSQL and FileMaker Pro.

  • Proficiency in developing analytic products using software such as Tableau, Spotfire, Alteryx, I2 Analyst Workstation, Palantir, and R Studio.

All faculty positions require teaching, scholarship, service and other duties consistent with the University's Faculty Handbook. An appropriate level of scholarship and clear potential to publish is expected. Applicants should provide evidence of teaching scholarship, service, and any sponsored research (e.g. grants or contracts).

Application Process: All information on candidates will be kept confidential. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter describing their academic and/or industry experiences relevant to the position, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, brief statement of research plans, and contact information for at least three professional references to:
