Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry (CoD) seek applications for the position of Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at NCH and Chair of the CoD’s Division of Pediatric Dentistry, a tenure track faculty positon at the rank of full or associate professor. Responsibilities include leadership of the pre-doctoral training program and the degree-granting residency program in Pediatric Dentistry; participation in advanced pediatric dentistry clinical and didactic training; oversight of patient care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital; and promoting and participating in scholarly activities.

 

Nationwide Children's Hospital is the largest pediatric hospital in the United States. Its Department of Dentistry, with Sections of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, provides the full range of dental and ancillary services in a new 30-chair dental clinic that is complemented by a surgery center with three operating rooms, both of which utilize Epic EHR and digital radiography. The Department is projected to provide 47,000 dental visits and 3,300 surgical and sedation procedures. The pediatric dentistry residency training program is CODA-approved for 16 residents with NCH serving as the primary clinical training site.

 

As an R1 research-intensive university with seven health science colleges on its campus, The Ohio State University provides the optimal environment for the College of Dentistry to meet its tripartite mission of education, research, and service. The CoD is the only public dental school in Ohio and it educates more than 60% of the state’s dentists. The college is distinguished nationally by its engagement of faculty throughout the campus, around the state, and across the nation in a host of experiences that provide enriching professional opportunities. The CoD is comprised of ten divisions that support seven specialty residency training programs accredited by CODA, in addition to residency training programs in general practice and dental anesthesiology. The college also benefits from a T32 award from the National Institutes of Health that supports its PhD program in oral biology.

 

As the NCH Pediatric Dental Chief and Chair of the CoD’s Division of Pediatric Dentistry, the successful candidate must have the following credentials and attributes:

 

• Evidence of leadership in pediatric dentistry as demonstrated by outstanding clinical reputation, a successful academic program, and accomplished mentees;
• Expertise in leading growth and change efforts in the development of new clinical, educational, or scientific programs;
• Understanding of organizational landscapes with an ability to anticipate and respond to challenges and opportunities;
• Capability of managing a complex organization, including clinical, educational, and academic missions with success levels determined by accepted outcome measures;
• Focus on a team-oriented, collegial, and collaborative leadership style with  extensive performance management experience;
• Appreciation for the importance of compliance with institutional and external regulatory protocols;
• Enthusiastic advocacy for NCH and the CoD’s multiple missions and their commitment to gender equity and diversity;
• Dedication to the teaching mission through didactic activity, participation in curriculum oversight and planning, and development of innovative approaches to education and training; and
• Commitment to enhancing academic scholarly activities for national recognition.

 

Candidates must have a DDS/DMD degree or international equivalent, and a certificate from a CODA-accredited advanced education program in pediatric dentistry. Candidates must also possess the qualifications required to obtain an Ohio dental license (http://dental.ohio.gov/Licensure/Dentist.aspx) and an appointment to the medical staff of NCH. A tenured appointment in the College of Dentistry requires candidates to have a record of research, scholarly works, and teaching excellence. Board certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is also required. Preference will be given to those with significant clinical and administrative experience in dental education.
